Chapter 16
Tales from the ARVInn Universe: David Tanner, Basketball

Chapter Description: Here are selections from a collection of personal recollections by AR-Adults from their first time back into various situations in their lives.

First Time Back—David Tanner, Basketball

I’ll have to admit—it feels really great to be able to play ball again.  I’d had a genetic test done years ago, when I first started in the NBA, that told me I was vulnerable to ARV, but I decided to live the best way I could and not let it control me.  I did take out an insurance policy to cover the possibility.

After all, I was twenty-three, six-eleven, a collegiate All-Star and was offered more money than I could spend.  I’d take the money and play.

Play I did, for fourteen seasons, with a couple of teams.  I’d decided 2086 would be my final season, but hadn’t announced it yet, when the AR Virus finally came calling.  We’d finished out of the playoffs, but that was mostly due to some really bad luck and untimely injuries, including myself.

I was coming back after an ankle sprain sidelined me for three games and we only had four games left.  I would have started the next one, but after leaving the Portland arena that evening, I began to feel light-headed and then blacked out.
