Chapter Description: Coach Jon was a powerful presence in a small container, but he could still get the job done.
Tales from the ARVInn—Jon Worden, Coach
Jon recalls being really aggravated with this particular
pupil. The high school rising junior was
supposed to be a top prospect for a Division I basketball program, but he just
didn’t seem to have an aggressive spark in him.
This run in the park should have been a matter of watching the kid leave
him in the dust, but Jon wasn’t even at top speed yet, after a half-mile, let
alone his pupil.
The big goof seemed to have no real need to pick up his pace in the run. He was the same way on the court—he just depended on his seven-foot height, at 16, to out-reach everybody else. He had no idea of aggressively going after the ball. It was so easy for him to intercept the ball on the way to the basket and pass it away that he was easy to neutralize with even a little force or a quick pass. Still, Jon had some ideas about building his competitive nature. Praise and reward go far with virtually everyone.
