Tales
from the ARVInn: Joel Latham, Fisherman
Joel Latham (2.5/2031) loves to tell anyone who’ll listen about the story behind this snapshot. He and his wife were celebrating their sixth anniversary in 2059, just two years after his virus infection. They’d dated from middle school through college and married the week after graduation. Her parents had gifted them their cabin on Conneault Lake in western Pennsylvania. Alex was already a published author by the time she graduated and had a 3-book contract with Halstead Publishing. The cabin was perfect for her writing, looking out across the lake and nestled among the trees. Joel was establishing his ‘brand’ as a professional fisherman and loved being able to get to the water in a few steps.
The success of Alex’s romantic mystery novels gave them a secure financial foundation, while Joel’s fishing career started well, but became sporadic due to the crisis which developed around the AR Virus. When he was infected, in 2057, he had just returned from a tournament in Michigan, where he’d actually won for the first time in a year. He bounced at age two-and-a-half, ending his traveling. The following months were difficult for both, as Alex now had to care for Joel, as he relearned motor skills and tried to decide what to do.
“I was well and truly thrown back to childhood,” he relates. “I couldn’t move around without stumbling and couldn’t feed myself without making a real mess. Poor Alex had to resort to feeding me for several months and I even used a bottle part of the time.
