Chapter 1
introduction

Chapter Description: An introduction to those new to the world of Duel Monsters.

****************************Intro to Yu-gi-oh!*****************************

This section is completely dedicated to backround information on Yu-gi-oh! And Yu-gi-oh! GX so people that don’t watch the series may have a chance to understand it. If you do watch/play Yu-gi-oh! Then please feel free to skip ahead to the story.

The Plot Thus Far . . . .

Yu-gi-oh! GX takes place in the near futrue after the events in Yu-gi-oh!: Millenium World. Duel Academy, where the story is told, is an uncharted island that holds a school for promising duelists. Students study hard and duel hard in hopes of becoming the next King of Games, a title that apparently is either up for grabs or still held by Yugi Muto, the hero of the original Yu-gi-oh! Series. It iss here that Jaden Yuki steps into the limelight. Although he his the Main Character in the TV show, this original story focus on his friend Syrus Trusedale. Its always more fun to take a sidekick and give him his own story!

The students of Duel Academy have different skill levels. Higher level students are placed in Obelisk Blue, named after the Legendary God Card, Obelisk the Tormentor, from the original TV show. Many Blues are snooty and stuck up, believing they are better then everyone else. Even their Head Teacher, Dr. Crowler shares this attitude.

Next on the totem pole are the students of Ra Yellow. Also named after a God Card, The Winged Dragon of Ra, the Yellows are the middle people. They aren’t the best nor the worse. However, if you are the worst of the worse, you fall into . . .

Slifer Red, where all of the Drop-out boys stay. They are cramped, under funded, and named after Slifer the Sky Dragon. Even though they have such a horrible reputation, three of our heroes live here!

Character Bios.(Taken from Yugioh.com)

Jaden Yuki

Jaden lives in the lowest-ranked Slifer Red dormitory because he gets bad grades, but he’s out to prove that test scores aren’t everything! His superior dueling skills and incredible instinct are unlike anything the teachers have seen before, and he’s ready to rock Duel Academy to its foundation!

Syrus Trusedale

While Jaden earned the pathetic score of 110 in the practical entry exams, Syrus was able to top him and score 111! Syrus has serious confidence issues, but with Jaden has a role model he might be able to duel harder!

Chumley Huffington

With his large and intimidating physique, Chumley is ready to duel and crush all combatants into crumbs... if he wasn’t so shy! Despite the body of a bear, he has the courage of a flea!

Though he has to retake his freshman year, his love for dueling hasn’t diminished one bit. As long as he loves dueling, and with a little encouragement from Jaden, he’s determined to overcome his timidity and become the great duelist that he knows he can be!

Baston Miasawa

Misawa’s smart and calculated dueling style easily earned him the highest grades in the freshmen applicant class! He can analyze his opponent’s weaknesses and exploit them to his advantage because he studies constantly to learn what to do in any situation.

His dueling style is almost the exact opposite of Jaden’s - while Misawa relies on rational methods, Jaden relies on instinct. Though they’re as different as night and day, they may grow to become the greatest of friends - and rivals!

Alexis Rhodes

Alexis’s dueling talent equals her beauty, and they’re both top-notch! Though widely regarded as the queen of Obelisk Blue, Alexis doesn’t let that title go to her head. Unlike the other high-ranking Obelisk Blue students, Alexis doesn’t follow the crowd and think that she’s better than anyone else, which may explain her interest in the independent and tough Jaden.

Though loved by everyone, she harbors deep sadness within because her brother has mysteriously disappeared...

Chazz Princeton

Chazz is a clever and highly-prospected freshman who was immediately placed into the highest-ranked Obelisk Blue dormitory. He believes that dueling is for the elite - not for the rabble-rousing low-scoring untalented masses! Anyone getting low grades should be kicked out of school, especially that loser Jaden!

Zane Trusedale

Even in a school packed with dueling prodigies, Obelisk Blue’s Zane stands atop the mountain as the king of Duel Academy because no other student has ever defeated this superstar duelist!

Though his younger brother Syrus is in the incoming class, he doesn’t waste his time thinking about him - why bother dealing with a younger brother who can’t duel?

Dr. Crowler

Dr. Crowler teaches basic duel training at Duel Academy, but don’t expect him to nurture you if you’re struggling in your studies. If you can’t keep up with his lessons, he wants you expelled! He believes dueling is for the top students who get excellent grades, so he secretly tries to push the weaker students to drop out of school. Nothing would make him happier than seeing Jaden expelled!

NOTE: Chazz Princeton makes no apperance whatsoever in this story, while everyone else besides Jaden and Syrus are only mentioned.

*******************************Dueling 101*******************************

Here is a very quick run-down of how to play ’Duel Monsters’ (AKA Yu-gi-oh!)

Players act as sorcerors, summoning monsters, casting spells, and springing traps on each other. The player that wins is the player that drains their opponenet’s 4000 life points to 0.

There are three main types of cards:

Monster cards preform all of the battles. They are friends, servants, and pawns. When monsters battle, players pay with their life points. Each monster has 2 numbers, ATK and DEF. Obviously the highe number wins in most cases.

ATK VS ATK - The monster with the highest attacks wins, the opposing monster is destroyed and placed into the graveyard (discard pile). The player who controlled the weaker monster loses life points equal to the difference in ATK strength. If the monsters have the same ATK strength, both monsters are destroyed.

ATK VS DEF - If the attacking monster’s ATK is higher, the defending monster is destroyed. No damage is done. If the defending monster’s DEF is higher, then the attacking player loses life points equal to the difference. If both are the same, nothing happens.

Spell cards create a wide array of terms and conditions on the battle fiend. There are many types of spells, but you only need to worry about Quickplay spells, or spells you can use on your opponenet’s turn; Normal Spells, which can only be played on your turn; Field Spells, which both players have acess to; and Continuous Spells, which stay in play for more than 1 turn.

Trap Cards can be played on your opponenet’s turn. Traps usually swing the tide of battle by messing with your opponenet’s plans.

There are many types of each card, but I won’t go into that.

When you start a duel, you draw 5 cards from your deck of 40 cards or more. It is important to keep a hand as more cards means more options.

Making a turn

DRAW PHASE - Draw 1 card.

STANDBY PHASE - Some cards activate here.

MAIN PHASE 1 - Play your Spells and Summon your monsters!

BATTLE PHASE - Attack!

MAIN PHASE 2 - Set up a counter attack!

END PHASE - End your turn!

But this should be enough to get you through. If you don’t get something, just read up! Remember, this AR takes place in a duel, so I can’t get too in-depth with what the victim is feeling. Just sit back, and remember that even babies can pack a whallop!
