Chapter 1
Going nowhere fast

Chapter Description: We see the world through Sam's eyes and learn a little bit about his life.

Life is a funny thing. One day you could be enjoying every minute of it and the next you’re stuck in time and don’t know what to look forward to. Well that’s exactly what happened to me right out of high school.

My name is Sam Miller and I’m 18 years old. I have 2 brothers; Jacob who is 20 and Logan who is 21. We are all about a year apart seeing as I turn 19 in just a few months. Logan got to go to a state college while Jacob and I went to a community college. I dropped out within the first few weeks cause I couldn’t stand it anymore. I decided to take the year off and figure out what I really wanted to do. Some people have sort of an idea of what they liked, but the only thing I truly liked was playing video games and watching TV. I worked at a pizza shop delivering pizza every night. The rest of the time I spent playing video games and masturbating. At first I spent some time trying to figure out what I wanted to do, but after the first week I honestly had no clue. At this point I kind of wished that I worked harder in school and did different things. I never played any sports or joined any clubs. At least with those I could have had a chance to figure out what I’m good at.

Day 1 Feb 17, 2016

I woke up at 9 this mourning to Jacob coming into my room searching frantically for something.

"Where are your car keys? I need you car. My batteries dead."

Still coming out of a trance I pointed at my pants on the ground and said "They’re in the pockets I think."

He quickly dug through them and found the keys saying "Thanks." before rushing out of my room. Soon after I heard the front door slam and my car screech out of the driveway. He had early mourning classes and I didn’t really need my car till later that night for delivery. I felt awake enough to get up, but I really didn’t want to due to the fact that it was chilly in my room and I was only in my boxers. I turned my heated blanket on full and fell back asleep.

When I woke up again I looked at the clock across my room, it was now 11:50. I stayed in bed for a few more minutes before finally getting up. I turned on my computer first so it could warm up. I went to the bathroom and took a nice warm shower. I just smiled to myself thinking about the day I was going to have. I would get dressed, make myself some waffles, watch some YouTube videos and then play some games until 5 when I started work.

When I actually did go to school I really didn’t enjoy life. In fact I didn’t really like how life was moving forward, because in the end I knew that I would just be going to work 9 to 5 every day and not really enjoying it at all. Sure you could say I’m lazy which I definitely am, but I’m also someone who actually accepts that I don’t need a purpose. Most people keep moving their life forward cause they need something to do to validate their existence. I know that I cant just be leeching off of my mom for the rest of my life. I had to eventually go out and make something of my life. For now though I was just enjoying every day of my freedom to do what I want.

The one thing that I did keep thinking of was that I should just join the army. I really don’t have a way to get into a good college otherwise and I think that I would make a good detective or something to do with law enforcement. The experience in the army would help with that. I always want to enjoy what I’m doing and as weird as it might seem I would enjoy the rush of a job with high stakes. I looked down at my pale body and thought that in no way would I be able to join the army in the shape I was in. I wasn’t fat or anything, but I definitely was lacking muscle. I started to run every day to get in better shape. I also wanted to join a gym and work out.

I was snapped out of my thoughts as I heard the front door open and close. My mom was home from work. She was a visiting nurse. I got out of the shower and dried off. I got dressed and left the bathroom to say hi, but before i could even say a word she asked "Have you applied for any colleges today?"

I replied "No, not yet."

She just shook her head and said "Well you better get on it cause you aren’t lounging around all next year. Even if you have to go back to community college. You gotta do something."

"I know, I know." I replied. There is no way I’m going back to community college. I haven’t told her about my plan to join the military cause I wasn’t actually that sure that I wanted to do that. It was more of a last resort type deal to buy myself some more time; Time. That’s what I needed. I needed more time to figure myself out and find out what I was truly passionate about. I needed a second chance at life.
