Chapter 9
Ending A

“I do not want to start over,” Irving began, “Kill me, if you have the balls.”

Mr. Avers glared at him. He raised the gun. He cocked it.....

Irving swung his foot up in between Mr. Aver’s legs. Mr. Aver gasped and dropped the gun. Irving used Bob and Dave’s surprise to flip them both over onto the ground. He grabbed Mr. Aver’s discarded pistol and held it up. He swept the room, keeping the workers back away from him as Bob, Dave, and Mr. Aver recovered.

He stood no chance. Irving ran up the stairs and out of the building. He heard the mob following him close behind. Irving quickly jumped into his car and peeled out. He sped off on the highway towards his precinct.

He took out a phone and dialed in a number. It rang several times before someone picked up.

“911 what is your emergency?”

“I am Detective Constable Irving. I need a squad at the Colossus on 34 True Street now! Top priority!”

“Yes sir. On their way now.”

Once the police arrived on the scene, they found all the evidence they needed to convict the elusive Mr. Aver, but no victims or suspects. Everyone was gone, the children, the workers, even Mr. Aver.

Detective Constable Irving was the one who found Mr. Aver’s notes. They detailed an extravagant formula used to precisely determine how much of the youth solution Mr. Aver should use. This was deemed too advanced for current society, so the notes were kept secret, but the building was burned down. Evidence was planted of course that showed the fire as arson, but only a select few knew the truth.

Irving knew. Unfortunately, he disappeared a few months after the Colossus incident. No one knows what happened to him, as his disappearance was never solved.

The newly promoted Detective Sergeant Irving sat in his apartment. He watched TV, having nothing to do. He sighed as he thought back on what could have been.

What if he had accepted Mr. Aver’s terms?

He didn’t know, and that bothered him. Irving sighed again, only to be struck in the head with something large and heavy. He grunted as consciousness fled.

“You have atoned.”

Irving tried to open his eyes to see, but everything was blurry. He could make out the image of a face, but he could not tell who it was. He knew who he was, but other memories were quickly fading. Who was his father? What was a Detective Sergeant?

“You are now merely two weeks old. For your crimes against our order, you shall be reraised and you will eventually carry on our work.”

Irving recoginized the voice, but he could not place a name to it or a face. All of what was happening frustrated him. He cried out, but the cry that left him was not what he expected.

Irving cried an infant’s wail.
