Chapter 3
Chapter 3

Chapter Description: Irving meets Dave, a young janitor who may know more than he lets on.

Irving walked past Tiffany and down the hall. He found the room and unlocked it with the small brass key. He entered.

It was a small room, like the Constable had requested. Irving saw a Murphy bed against the wall, as well as a small living area with a modest TV. He took out a spy bug and stuck it under the coffee table, that way any conversations he had in here would be recorded.

Irving glanced at the digital clock on the side table. It was seven thirty, which meant that Irving would soon have to begin his search. He planned to raid Mr. Aver’s office and find the true documents, for his instinct told him that Mr. Aver was lying. All of the victims going here couldn’t have been a coincidence.

A knock on the door brought Irving back. He stood up and opened the door. A young man in his early twenties stood across from Irving. He had a scruffy beard and short brown hair.

“Are you Dave the janitor?”Irving asked.

Dave gave him a strange look. “Yes, how do you know?”

“Tiffany told me. Would you be willing to answer some questions? I’m Detective Constable Irving. I’m investigating the disappearances of seven teens that have all come here at one point. I’m told you knew one of them, Joaquin?”

Dave sighed. “Yes, I knew him. He was homeless and friendless, so I tried talking to him. Turns out, we had a lot in common. It is sad that he had to be.....”

“Kicked out? Yes, Tiffany told me about the Sunday rule.”

Dave hesitated, and then nodded. “Yes, it is necessary.”

Irving took note of his hesitation.

“Anyway, I must attend to other duties, Detective. I was going to clean this room, but it’s quite obvious it’s clean enough. Goodbye,” Dave said. He stepped out of the doorframe, allowing Irving to shut the door.

He dragged the bed down and sat in it. This whole rule about vacating by midnight was unusual, especially since no one appeared to be even packing. It seems that only the workers and he knew about this rule. If these kids did not leave, what happened to them? Irving decided to forget about it until the time for the raid came.
