Richy just couldn’t get over that the person he had been talking to in the sandpit had been his best friend’s sister. Maybe Troy was right, perhaps his lack of interest in others when he had some degree of independence had contributed to his designation. Richy realised he was still staring at Jess who seemed increasingly uncomfortable, he quickly looked away. There was an uncomfortable silence. It was particularly difficult for Richy who knew Troy was still looking at him even as he went to stand behind his sister’s swing.

“Sorry about that, Richy, it was important.” Kate was walking back over and putting her phone back in her pocket. She must’ve then seen Troy behind Jess, “Oh, hold on, you look familiar...”

Richy ducked his head in embarrassment. He could see Jess was now moving back and forth as she was pushed by her brother, she seemed equally embarrassed to be there. Richy found himself thinking “you’ll get used to it…” which was unfair, he never had after all.

“Nice to see you, Kate.” Troy said.

“I’m sorry, do I… Wait, I remember you!” Kate was behind Richy, he couldn’t see her face, but he could hear the recognition, “You’re Richy’s friend, right? Erm… Sorry, I don’t remember your name.”

“Troy.” Troy said.

“That’s it.” Kate chuckled, “Fancy running into you here. Is that your sister?”

“Yep. Only recently designated and since I’m at home for a little bit I’ve become the de facto babysitter.” Troy laughed.

Richy swung back and forth a little as his sister gave the seats small pushes. When he moved backwards through the air, he saw Jess moving forwards and vice versa. They were just like two little kids playing whilst the grown ups caught up with each other. He wanted to tune out the conversation between Troy and Kate, it wasn’t easy though, there wasn’t a lot of other things to focus on.

“How’s it been going?” Kate asked, “I know the first few months can be rough.”

“We’re getting there.” Troy replied, “We seem to be past the tantrum stage at least.”

Richy risked a glance sideways just in time to see Jess moving forwards past him on the swing. Her lips were pursed and her face a deep red. Richy wished he could reach out to her and tell her not to worry, that tantrums were a very legitimate response to the unfair situation they found themselves in.

Kate and Troy continued to chat away. They seemed to be getting on well, the conversation being mainly focused on, of course, the two big babies they were at the park with. At first, Richy was just a little annoyed that Troy was hanging around, he would’ve preferred them to leave and get the embarrassing situation over with. Then he felt a cold horror washing over him as he heard Troy laughing in a very specific way, he recognised that laugh from parties they’d both gone to together.

“I remember you used to come round our house a lot.” Kate said to Troy.

“Yeah, you never seemed to be around much though.” Troy replied.

“I think Richy tried to hide me away. Too embarrassed by his little sister, I suppose.” Kate chuckled as she gave Richy’s swing another push.

“Embarrassed by you? Impossible.” Troy said.

“Well, believe it or not, I think Richy here thinks I’m “uncool.”” Katie continued.

“No, that can’t be right.” Troy said, “You seem cool to me. Besides, who cares what a baby thinks?”

Then the laugh. Troy’s not quite natural chuckling that he always had when he was interested in someone. Richy froze at almost the same moment as his bladder released. His diaper was already soaked as he felt fresh heat warming the inside of it. He hardly paid attention to that though; he was more concerned that his best friend was flirting with his sister!

“You’re too kind.” Kate replied. Richy could hear the slight embarrassment in her voice. Dear God, she was actually responding to Troy.

“Maybe we could get together one evening.” Troy suggested, “Share techniques for looking after the little ones over a drink or something.”

Kate didn’t answer straight away. Richy felt the pool of urine in his diaper seem to grow in size as it struggled to find padding that could absorb it. He was silently begging his sister to turn Troy down. It would just be too humiliating and weird if they started seeing each other.

Richy suddenly felt a cold wetness streak down his leg. He became aware that the warm puddle he was sat on was cooling quickly at the sides and knew that he was leaking. He had barely been thinking about himself, so focused on his sister and Troy, butt now his attention flew back to the now leaking diaper underneath him. He couldn’t do anything or go anywhere, he couldn’t even tell Kate what was happening, not when Jess was swinging back and forth next to him.

“I’d like that.” Kate answered after a few seconds of apparent deliberation, “This Friday?”

“Sounds good to me.” Troy replied, “I’ll pick you up from your place.”

“It’s a date.” Kate said.

“I was rather hoping so.” Troy said with another of those laughs. The ones spared only for the ladies, and that always seemed to get what he wanted.

Richy was cringing from a mixture of what was happening behind him and the wetness on his legs. His eyes filled with tears and, before he knew it was coming, he was crying. Leaning forwards over the bar in front of him and covering his face with his hands as he sobbed.

“Richy? What’s wrong?” Kate quickly stopped the swing, “Oh, baby, you’ve leaked.”

Richy didn’t need to uncover his face to know that Jess was staring at him. For some reason it hurt more that the new adult baby saw him like this than it did Troy. He was unbuckled from the swing, and his hand was taken as he stumbled out of it. He could feel that the back of his shorts was soaked and now that he was standing up, wet streaks cascaded down his thighs and legs.

“Oh, wow…” Troy’s voice came from behind Richy, and he sounded very uncomfortable to have witnessed the humiliation.

“Come on, let’s get you changed.” Kate said as she started leading Richy towards the benches.

Richy couldn’t bear to look behind him. He could feel the looks he was getting, from both Troy and Jess, but also from anyone else who could see him. He waddled along and did his best to hide his face from all the interested onlookers. He tried to stem the tears and sobs, but it was like they had to work their way out of him one way or another, each sob was like a little explosion that he couldn’t contain.

“There’s a changing station just over here.” Kate said, “We’ll get you cleaned up in a jiffy.”

Richy heard childish laughter from behind. He was sure it was directed at him. His frustration and embarrassment started to threaten to boil over. When he was treated like a baby so thoroughly by everyone around him it was difficult sometimes to be anything else, no matter how much he wanted to be.

“It’s… It’s not fair!” Richy sobbed.

“I know, baby.” Kate wasn’t really listening. At least that’s the way it seemed to Richy.

The bathroom with the changing station was in the corner of the playground. Thankfully there wasn’t a queue, Kate pushed the door open and walked inside with Richy stumbling behind her. In next to no time, Richy’s clothes were off, and he was lying horizontally on the changing table.

“Troy seems nice.” Kate said as she opened Richy’s diaper.

Richy saw the way his sister gave a coy little smile, and he felt for a second like he was about to throw up. It was like he was watching a car crash happening in front of him. Two cars speeding into each other and all he could do was look on with horror.

“Don’t go out with him…” Richy whined.

“Why not?” Kate asked as she cleaned Richy up and dropped the diaper into the trash, “Does he treat women badly?”

“What? No.” Richy had never heard anyone complaining about Troy. As far as he knew the man was a totally stand-up guy.

“Then what’s wrong?” Kate asked.

“It’s just… weird.” Richy said, “He was my best friend before designation.”

“Oh, Richy…” Kate shook her head as she unzipped the diaper bag and pulled out a fresh disposable, “You know that nothing before designation really matters for you. I’m sorry, but things are very different now.”

It was blunt but it was true. Richy sniffed loudly and wiped his eyes with his shirt. Troy had finished college and was looking to start his adult life in earnest, just like Kate was. They had futures lined up and who knew where it would take them. It was different for Richy and Jess. Their tomorrow was the same as their today, they couldn’t expect anything but more of the same. Kate powdered Richy and then taped the new diaper up. She leaned against the changing table and looked down at him.

“Look, I’ll take your opinion into consideration. I like him and would like to get to know him better.” Kate said with a sigh, “I know I shouldn’t care about what a baby thinks, but you know him better than me. If you think he’s truly bad news, then I will hear you out.”

Richy was shocked. Nobody asked his opinions on things like that anymore; he was pretty sure Kate could get in trouble if the powers that be found out she was giving a Little that much respect. He wanted to tell her that Troy was a bad person and that she could do better. It wasn’t true, at least the Troy being bad part, but it would ward off a very awkward situation for himself. At the same time, Kate had just shown Richy more respect in asking that one opinion, than every other adult in his life. He didn’t know if he could disappoint his sister.

Perhaps this was the reason Richy had been designated Little. Here was one relatively small decision and he was completely frozen by it. Tell the truth and see his sister go out on a date with his former best friend or lie and scupper a chance both the others had at potentially being happy. He didn’t know what to say as he was dressed again, thankfully with a new pair of shorts that Kate had packed in the diaper bag.

“Well?” Kate asked as she helped Richy down from the table.

“I, erm…” Richy stuttered a little, “I think…”

“Yes?” Kate prompted.

“I think that you… shouldn’t see him.” Richy finally said quietly. His selfish wants winning out over the happiness of others.

“I see.” Kate stood up straight. Her face hardened a little as she packed up the diaper bag, “And why do you think that?”

“I just don’t think you’re a good fit for each other.” Richy said. It was a vague answer because he had no concrete reason for getting in the way of the two of them.

Richy was prepared for Kate to look disappointed, or even angry, but he hadn’t expected her to start laughing like she did. He frowned at her, confused as to why she was having such a reaction. She slung the diaper bag over her shoulder and sighed as she looked at him.

“For the longest time I thought the whole designation thing was a terrible mistake.” Kate said as she reached over and cupped Richy’s cheek with her hand, “But you have helped me to see why it’s good.”

“I… I have?” Richy asked in confusion.

“Richy, baby… You’re very selfish. There is no reason for me to not go on a date with Troy, is there?” Kate said. She spoke as if it was the objective truth, as if disagreeing with her would be like disagreeing that the sun rises each morning. Richy didn’t move but that seemed to be confirmation for Kate, “I was initially shocked that you were designated Little, but the more I’ve seen the more sense it makes. I know why you might not want me to go out with Troy, and I imagine the emotions are just too big for you to be able to process, right?”

Richy hung his head. She wasn’t necessarily wrong in that it wasn’t easy to explain exactly why he didn’t want her going out with Troy, but now Kate was using an argument commonly brought out by people who supported others being designated Little: That they just couldn’t handle adult emotions, that it led to them getting angry and lashing out or depressed. Kate was the last person he expected to hear it from.

“Your problem is that you still hold on to that shred of hope that you might be Big again one day.” Kate said, “You might not even be aware you are doing it. You need to stop. You are a baby. You will always be a baby. Heck, I think you’re the poster child for why designation was brought in. Trying to stop me from seeing Troy just because it makes you feel weird or whatever just shows how immature you are.”

Perhaps Richy had still been holding on to some invisible string linking him with adulthood. He thought he’d lost that hope years ago, but if he was really honest with himself, was it still there? That lingering hope that someone might listen to him as an equal, the disappointment that his sister saw him as a baby, it was evidence that he still hadn’t given up.

“You’ll be much happier once you let go.” Kate said as she stepped forwards and hugged her brother, “You’re a baby. You don’t need to worry about grown up things anymore. Stop fighting and accept it.”

Richy was tearing up again. He shuddered in Kate’s hug, clutching the few things that made him feel like more than just a baby ever harder. He couldn’t let them go. If he gave up completely, he would lose himself.

Kate was smiling as she let Richy go. He took her proffered hand without saying a word and was led back out into the sunshine. It took a second for his eyes to adjust from the dim light of the changing room to the brightness of the outside world. As his eyes did adjust, he saw that Troy was standing in front of him, his hands on the shoulders of his sister whose eyes kept darting to the side every time someone nearby moved, like a prey animal looking for predators.

“Hey.” Troy said with a nervous smile, “I just realised that I never got your number.”

“Oh, of course, hold on a second.” Kate said as she went over and took his phone, typing her digits in and then handing it back.

“Cool, I’ll send you a text later.” Troy said as he put the phone back in his pocket.

“Looking forward to it.” Kate replied, “Now, Richy, say goodbye to your little friend, OK? It’s time to go home.”

Richy, blushing furiously, raised a hand to say goodbye. Jess did the same. For a second they shared a smile before Kate started leading Richy away from the playground and back towards home.

---

One Year Later…

---

Richy stared at himself in the mirror. He wasn’t at all used to seeing himself dressed up so nicely. Instead of his usual bright colours and onesies, he was wearing a remarkably smart looking white shirt under a grey suit jacket and light blue tie. He couldn’t remember the last time he had worn such smart clothes, but it was definitely prior to designation.

If Richy closed his eyes, he could almost make himself believe that all the designation stuff had been a horrible dream, that he was normal again. It couldn’t last forever. Sooner or later, he had to open his eyes and as soon as he did, he could see the bulging underneath his suit’s pants. There was no mistaking what that was caused by. Neither was there any way to trick himself into thinking the warmth coming from inside the diaper was anything other than yet another accident caused by his almost completely atrophied bladder control.

“You know, your sister tried to convince me that you’d have looked better in this.” Troy said.

Richy turned away from the mirror and blanched when he saw the photo on the phone screen that Troy was showing him. It was of a young man, clearly a Little, who was wearing a white onesie with black pictures that made it look like he had a bowtie and jacket. Richy shuddered at the thought of wearing it himself. Troy chuckled.

“Yeah, I didn’t think you would like it.” Troy said as he put the phone away.

Richy looked at the man who had once been his best friend. He was wearing a suit as well, a much fancier one than Richy, but then this was his day. Richy nearly lost his footing as he took a step backwards. Being allowed to stand up when no one was holding his hand was a bit of a novelty for him at that point, but his sister had said it was alright since it was a special occasion.

“You look pretty handsome though.” Troy said with a big smile. Without skipping a beat, he stuck his hand in the waistband of Richy’s pants and checked the diaper, “Wet, but you should be alright.”

Richy felt nervous. His hands automatically went to his chest where he normally had a pacifier hanging from the end of a ribbon. It wasn’t there that day and he felt extra vulnerable without it. Troy noticed what he was looking for and reached into his pocket. He produced a brand-new pacifier, one that matched the colours of the suit. Richy blushed but took it thankfully and stuck it between his lips.

This was the day everything changed. It was the day his sister was marrying Troy. It was the day the two of them would be adopting Richy.

It wasn’t that Richy’s actual mom and dad, William and Davina, had grown tired of him. They were just older and didn’t have the energy to keep up with the demands of a baby. It wasn’t unusual for Littles to be adopted out eventually, no one could expect elderly people to look after babies, Richy was just lucky Kate and Troy were willing to adopt him and bring him into their home. He would be moving in as soon as the ceremony was over, a brand-new nursery awaited him. He wouldn’t be alone in there either.

“You know what to do when walking down the aisle?” Troy asked nervously.

Richy nodded. It wasn’t exactly the most taxing of jobs even if it was humiliating. At least he knew Jess would be with him, though he wasn’t completely sure whether or not that just made everything worse. As well as adopting Richy, the couple were also taking Jess from her parents as well. For Richy, who had developed a little crush on Jess, it was a nightmare. He shivered whenever one of his new “parents” referred to the pretty woman as his “sister.”

There was a knock at the door, and all the nervous fidgeting stopped. Eyes turned to the far side of the room where the door opened and Troy’s best man, Charlie, another old friend of Richy’s walked in. Richy quickly looked down at the floor. Whilst all his old friends knew about his position, they hadn’t seen him as much as Troy had, they still stared with a mixture of horror and pity.

“Everything going alright?” Charlie asked. He managed to eventually pull his eyes away from Richy’s cringing form.

“Yeah.” Troy nodded his head and swallowed, “Just the usual anxiety, you know? Just wondering if I could fit out that window and run away.”

Richy looked up at Troy with a frown, but it seemed like he was making a joke. Richy knew that Troy and Kate had fallen head over heels in love.

“As your best man, I am duty bound to tie you to the chair and drag you down the aisle if you try to run away.” Charlie said with a laugh, “That said, they are nearly ready to go, they sent me to come get you.”

“Right, wow, OK…” Troy took a deep breath.

“You’ll do great.” Charlie said as he patted the groom on the back. He continued in a serious voice, “And just remember, don’t worry if it goes wrong, it’s only the most important day in your life that everyone present will remember forever.”

“Thanks for that.” Troy said sarcastically before they both laughed again.

Richy missed that. He missed being one of the guys. He missed being equals with the people he had grown up with. Now it felt like he shouldn’t join in with the in-jokes and conversations the others had. It wasn’t just that he had been designated as a person inferior to the others, it was that he truly felt it. He was a baby, if he tried to join in, he would just be annoying.

“Alright, let’s go.” Troy said. He turned to the mirror and quickly straightened his tie before standing up and walking towards the door with Charlie and Richy in tow, “I’ll see you up there.”

The church was an old building and as they stepped out of the changing room Troy was stepping through the double doors and up the aisle, past pews full of family and friends, a lot of whom Richy recognised. Richy and Charlie hung back for a minute. There was an awkward silence between them, as there was whenever they were in a room alone together since the designation.

“Crazy day, huh?” Charlie said as he leaned backwards and forwards on the balls of his feet. He was looking anywhere except at Richy.

“Uh huh.” Richy mumbled around the pacifier. It felt so natural in his mouth, he’d certainly had a lot of practice with it in the last few years.

“You’re going to need this.” Charlie said. He held out a red velvety cushion that had the two wedding rings on it. Richy had barely taken it before Charlie suddenly pulled away.

“Oh, I think I’m being called.” Charlie said as he craned his neck and looked up the aisle, “Good luck!”

Charlie seemed delighted to be called away. For just a few seconds Richy was all alone in the lobby of the church. The murmuring crowds attending the wedding in one direction and the door to the outside in the other. It was the first time Richy had been left alone like that for any period of time in months. He wasn’t given long to think about his complete dependence on others though. The door opposite the groom’s changing room opened and a flurry of girls stepped out.

Richy moved backwards to make room. The last to emerge was Jess, dressed in a ultra-frilly pink dress and wearing her hair in two pigtails with two pink bows, and then Kate. Richy’s mouth dropped open, and the pacifier nearly tumbled from his mouth. His sister looked incredible. The long traditional white wedding dress seemed made for her, and with her hair and makeup done exquisitely, she’d never looked so good. Jess made her way through the crowd to Richy.

“Are you ready?” Jess asked. She was holding a small wicker basket full of petals.

“No.” Richy mumbled around his pacifier. He tried not to feel inadequate that he needed his soother and Jess, seemingly, didn’t.

“Me neither.” Jess muttered quietly, “It sucks.”

There was a lot of excited chatter between the women in the lobby. Kate made her way over to Richy carefully, making sure her dress didn’t snag on anything, she was beaming with happiness.

“You look absolutely adorable!” Kate said as she pulled Richy into a hug.

“You look beautiful.” Richy replied truthfully.

“I hope so.” Kate said, “After all the effort losing weight to fit in this thing!”

Richy smiled as Kate laughed.

“I can’t wait for us to be a happy little family.” Kate said as she reached up and stroked Richy’s hair.

Richy just smiled. He didn’t know what to say. It was certainly better than being adopted to some random people, but it wasn’t exactly the family he imagined himself having when he was younger. He didn’t really know what to say to Kate but was thankfully saved by an organ starting up. The chatter in the lobby died down as all the women lined up. Kate put her hands on Jess’s shoulders and led her to the front of the little train. She reached down and patted the thick diaper under the dress.

“Off you go.” Kate whispered.

Jess shot Richy one look that seemed to be asking for help and then faced forwards. With trembling tentative steps, she walked out and down the aisle scattering petals as she went. Richy leaned forwards to watch her wide-legged waddle. He tried to stop thinking about how cute she was like that, knowing she was feeling as embarrassed as he soon would be. Everyone in the pews was standing and had turned to look backwards, many were nudging their friends and whispering about how cute the baby was.

Once Jess was about halfway down the aisle the rest of the wedding party started their march. Soon Richy was alone again, holding the cushion with the rings. It was his job to go walk out last, when the rings were needed. They seemed to have arranged it that way so that all eyes would be on him. That’s the way it felt to Richy at least.

Richy watched as Kate reached the altar. The ceremony started and Richy felt waited for his cue. It was when the rings were called for that he took a deep breath and stepped out into the church himself.

Richy could hear the muttering and whispering about the cute boy. He could see cousins he barely recognised smiling at him as if he was the most adorable sight, he saw aunts and uncles taking photos on their phones, and he saw friends he remembered from school staring at him with wide eyes. It was excruciating.

Having to hold a steady pace was very difficult when Richy wasn’t too used to walking in those days. That was before considering how restrictive the wet diaper under his pants was. He had to focus on not falling over even if crawling to the front would’ve probably been easier for him.

Kate was crying when he reached the front. Tears or happiness causing her mascara to run ever so slightly. Troy was sweating a bit and still looked very nervous. Richy stood in front of them both, red faced from the humiliating walk of shame, as the marrying couple took the rings. He was grateful to step off to the side for the rest of the ceremony, doing his best to avoid looking at anyone and everyone at the wedding.

“You may now kiss the bride.” The vicar eventually said.

As everyone broke into applause and whoops of cheers, Richy had a very different reaction. His disposable suddenly warmed around his groin with no warning as he helplessly wet himself. Whilst everyone else was congratulating the newlyweds, he was left hoping that either his new Mommy or Daddy would be available to change his diaper in the not-too-distant future.
