Chapter 1
Prologue

*A few days before Halloween.*

The bell’s ring had suddenly echoed through the house only a few moments ago, followed by silence, when, quite inevitably, Peter heard his mother call his name from the cellar.

"Peter! Didn’t you hear ? Answer the door, please, I’m occupied here!"

He had of course heard it very well, being in the living room almost in front of it, but the couch in which he was half sprawled was way too comfortable and the Reddit’s comments on his phone’s App way too full of puns for him to make such a move by himself.

Besides, Peter was an high school junior and as such, answering the door was among setting the table, emptying his desk’s bin or taking out the trashbag on the list of things he definitely wasn’t going to do before a second, more annoyed request.

Before such one could be made, however, the rumbling steps of his little sister coming down the stairs preceded her high pitched voice.

"I’m answering!" She panted before reaching the door and opening it to a delivery man. Or the glimpse of it, as she quickly half closed the door behind her.

"Mom! It’s a package!" Peter called while changing subreddits. He dimly wondered why she seemed in such a hurry to do the doorkeeper. ’Bah, who know what goes through the head of that little brat ?’ he decided.

When Elisabeth closed the door a moment later and answered her inquiring mom coming up from the cellar, he had already focused back on his phone.

"Don’t worry, mom, it was a mistake. He had the wrong name and I told him so!" said the elementary schooler.

He looked up again just in time to see her hastily go up the stairs, her left arm weirdly sticked to her body, and he could’ve sworn for a moment that she was hiding something behind her. The picture on his phone finally loaded, though, and he didn’t give it more thoughts.
