Joey felt some movement in his crib. His mom must’ve been leaning on the side as he felt the inflatable surface he was lying on slope slightly. His eyes were still tightly closed; he wasn’t ready to wake up yet. A hand pressed against the padding on his butt and he grumbled.
“This is so weird.”
Joey’s eyes snapped open, and he quickly rolled over to face the voice. It wasn’t his mother at all. Instead, he saw Ben leaning over the side with one arm reaching through the bars and pressing his disposable against him. Joey quickly slid away from the hand until his back hit the bars. It was bad enough being seen like this by his mom and baby brother, for some reason it felt worse that it was Ben.
“W-What are you doing in here?” Joey asked. He wanted to sound authoritative but failed.
“Mom told me to come up and check on you.” Ben said.
It was difficult to read Ben’s emotions. He had clearly not been enthusiastic about everything the previous day, but as Joey looked up at his teenage brother, he found it hard to really read any one emotion in his face. He certainly didn’t seem happy to be roped into taking part but there were few clear and obvious signs of outright disgust. He seemed, perhaps, more confused than anything.
“L-Look…” Joey got on to his knees and quickly regretted it. The loud crinkles seemed to shock Ben, and he stared at Joey’s crotch, “I… I didn’t want this…”
“You let it happen though.” Ben replied with a shrug.
Joey couldn’t really respond to that. Maybe Ben was right. A real man, a proper adult, wouldn’t have let themselves end up padded and kneeling in a crib. He looked away from his teenage brother and instead looked down, he realised that he was still clutching Mortimer against himself and quickly dropped it to his side.
“Whatever.” Ben said, “Look, I won’t pretend that I get this. I won’t pretend like I think it’s a good idea or that it isn’t weird or gross. But as long as you don’t let people know what’s happening then I guess I can…”
Ben trailed off and Joey wasn’t entirely sure what he was about to say. Perhaps he was about to tell Joey that as long as he didn’t embarrass his younger brother by having this new situation discovered then he wouldn’t make problems about it. Joey felt his cheeks flush red. His teenage brother, five years younger than himself, was embarrassed by him. He could hardly blame Ben. If people at school found out, then Ben would likely experience problems just because he was related to the weird big baby.
“Believe me, I don’t want anyone to know either.” Joey muttered.
“Yeah, well…” Ben didn’t seem to know what to say, “Mom said I’m the man of the house now. So, she expects me to take up some of your responsibilities. I told her I’m not changing your… you know.”
Joey closed his eyes as the shame washed over him. His brother was taking his position and as such, he would be expected to help out with the babies. Plural. Joey didn’t say anything. He was more than happy for Ben to not be more involved with his diapers; everything was already embarrassing enough.
“Well, anyway, I’ve done what Mom asked.” Ben turned away from the crib and started for the door.
“Wait… Aren’t you going to let me out?” Joey asked.
Ben looked from Joey to the door of the crib. Sure, there was a lock on it, but it was obvious that Joey could reach through the bars and open it himself if he needed. Hell, the inflatable bars weren’t even very high, Joey could just step out of it. After a few seconds Ben just shook his head and left the room without a word. Joey wasn’t sure if he was saying he wouldn’t let Joey out or that he was in disbelief that he was even being asked. Either way, he left, and Joey was left alone in the crib again.
In the end, Joey had to wait another half an hour before his mother walks in. He was awake, but she still leant over the side of the crib to check him again. He was still dry, of course. He remembered wetting himself before his nap and the shame was so great it made him want to sink into the inflatable crib.
“Right, up you get.” Fran said as she opened the gate.
It wasn’t easy to walk on the ever-moving inflatable beneath him, so Joey had to crawl a couple of steps until he found the harder surface of the nursery floor. He stood up and the usual crinkles were only slightly lessened by the onesie.
Joey didn’t know what the plan was, so he waited whilst his mom closed the gate. She turned and smiled at him before she took his hand and led him out and on to the landing. They headed downstairs and back into the living room where Lucas was still sitting in the playpen. The gate was opened, and Joey felt like he had essentially traded one cell for another as he stepped in. If he hadn’t been so mild-mannered he might have rebelled but that had never been in his nature, he’d always been a timid guy.
“I’ll get you both some drinks. Play nice.” Fran said.
A couple of minutes later two bottles were placed in the playpen. Lucas didn’t even look up from his toys as he grabbed it and started sucking. Joey was more hesitant but eventually put it between his lips and drank a little bit when his mom made it clear she was waiting for him.
“Still a baby.” Lucas lisped slightly as he looked up.
“Yep.” Joey replied shortly, “Still a baby…”
And Joey had to wonder how long it will remain that way.
---
The day was relatively dull. Joey was still hesitant to join in with Lucas’s games but for lack of any other stimulation he eventually gave in. It was around the time that Fran brought in some lunch for the pair of them, a couple of sandwiches, an apple and bag of chips each, that Joey had his second accident in diapers.
Rather stupidly, Joey had been trying to hold back from wetting himself. He knew it was inevitable, but he still couldn’t bring himself to do it. It meant that when their mother came in to check both of them, she could take Lucas off to get his wet disposable changed and Joey was left squirming in the pen. Once alone, it seemed a lot easier to let go, and it was something he had to do as the pain in his bladder was getting a little too much to ignore.
Joey got on to his knees and closed his eyes. For the second time that day he felt a burst of warmth around his groin. He blushed from embarrassment as he felt the diaper greedily soak up his accident and, once he was done, a generous proportion of the padding felt heavier and hotter than it had before. He felt a little shiver go through him before he finished and he sat back down, feeling the diaper get pressed against his skin.
It was a few minutes later that Fran brought Joey back down. The baby was in a new diaper and, to Joey’s shame, dressed in a onesie very similar to his own. He wondered how he was going to tell his mom what he had done, that he needed a change for the second time that day, one more time than his baby brother, he thought to himself.
Lucas was placed back in the playpen along with a couple of fresh bottles and then Fran left the room. Joey hadn’t said anything. He was too embarrassed. Though, as a result of his timidity, he had been sentenced to sitting in his own wet diaper for the foreseeable future. He had to admit; it could’ve been a worse feeling. Aside from the considerable embarrassment, the warmth was pleasant against his skin and the thickened padding made sitting on the floor a lot easier. He wasn’t at all uncomfortable. Physically, at least. Mentally and emotionally, it was a little harder to accept what he was doing and where he was.
Lucas had gone right back to playing with his toys, so Joey joined in. He knew he was supposed to be feeling like Lucas, that it was meant to be “relaxing”, but it wasn’t working yet. His anxieties had shifted, sure, but they were still there. If anything, he felt like he was just doing some deep immersion babysitting.
When Joey did allow himself to think past his immediate future he felt the familiar stab of anxiety. The feeling of a ball of anxiety, heavy and unpleasant, in his stomach. He had school and work to think about, and his mom still hadn’t explained how that was going to be compatible with his new… lifestyle? Was that how he could best describe it? He couldn’t think of any other phrasing that would make sense.
Joey imagined Tracy walking in and seeing him like that. How on earth could he ever explain this to her in a way that didn’t result in her walking out on him whilst howling with laughter? He shivered, and this time it had nothing to do with going potty in his pants.
The rest of the afternoon followed that same pattern. Joey spent his time playing with Lucas’s toys and getting used to the wet diaper. He tried not to let his mind idle, because whenever it did, he started worrying again. It seemed like the best course of action was to just try not to worry, to distract himself with the silly little games Lucas thought up. That was his mom’s plan with all this after all.
The one thing that punctured the otherwise quiet time in the playpen was Fran coming in to find that Joey was wet again. She smiled when taking him for another diaper change. Her comments that she was quickly getting used to doing it didn’t make Joey feel much better about any of it.
Somewhere in the mid-afternoon Joey could hear scraping coming from the kitchen. He couldn’t say the exact time, there was no clock in the living room, and he didn’t have access to his phone. Ben and Fran’s voices came down the hallway and then it was the teenager that walked into the living room. He walked over to the playpen and Lucas automatically got into a position to have his diaper checked. He was dry.
“Come on, Joey.” Ben said.
“It’s, erm, not necessary.” Joey mumbled. It was only as he spoke that he realised he had his pacifier in his mouth. How long had it been there?
“Mom asked me to check both of you.” Ben replied impatiently.
It was still difficult for Joey to get a read on Ben. He didn’t look overly happy about what he had to do, but at the same time there was definitely something in there that seemed to relish it. Was he enjoying getting to lord it over his older brother? Just happy to be given responsibility? Or maybe it was a sense of superiority that he was now the man of the house with Joey a useless baby. Joey thought that not even Ben was sure, he couldn’t blame him. He had no idea how he would’ve reacted if the shoe was on the other foot and Ben was the one who found himself in the playpen.
“Mom changed me an hour or so ago!” Joey said with annoyance. When Ben raised his eyebrows and stared at him, his mouth curling into a bit of a smirk, Joey regretted saying anything and blushed wickedly. Any smile Ben might have had quickly disappeared very quickly.
“Come on.” Ben moved his fingers to tell Joey to come closer.
Joey got awkwardly to his feet. He walked over to the edge of his playpen and then spread his legs a little in the same way Lucas had done. He looked away and blushed as he felt Ben’s fingers press the padding against him before saying that he was still dry. Joey, of course, already knew that. He quickly retreated to where he had been sitting before Ben came in. For his part, his teenage brother looked like he couldn’t leave the room fast enough.
At some point that afternoon Joey’s mother walked in with two baby bottles. One was handed to Lucas whilst a bigger one was placed next to Joey. He saw the amber teat, so like the pacifier he still found solace in, and shuddered. Fran was turning to leave the room when Joey spoke up.
“Mom?” Joey said hesitantly.
Fran stopped in the doorway, but she didn’t turn around. Joey realised what she was waiting for and, despite his throat feeling thick with shame that he couldn’t swallow, he cleared his throat and tried again.
“Mommy…” Joey said quietly.
This time Fran turned around and was smiling pleasantly. Joey took a deep breath. He thought he’d played along with this for long enough and was ready to throw in the towel. This was all supposed to be relaxing for him, but, if anything, he was more stressed than ever.
“I think… I think we should stop.” Joey said seriously, “It’s not working.”
“Baby, you’ve got to give it more time.” Fran replied quickly, “You’re still adjusting.”
“I know you think that but…” Joey started.
“I don’t think it.” Fran said with a shake of her head, “I know it.”
And that was that. Joey didn’t know what else to say and after a couple of seconds Fran said that dinner wouldn’t be too far away and left the room. Joey leaned back until he was staring at the ceiling. He closed his eyes and wondered what he could say to end this crazy experiment. He considered calling his girlfriend and trying to arrange to stay with her, to get out of the house, but that seemed unlikely. If nothing else, Tracy would expect to be told what was going on that caused this sudden break. Joey couldn’t exactly tell her what had been going on. It was already embarrassing enough without more people finding out.
