Joey's Pacifier

Chapter Description: With his last day of school behind him, nothing seems to be in the way of his family treating him like the new baby. (Slightly shorter update this week. I've had a terrible flu which has really slowed me down.)

“Wakey wakey!” Fran’s voice was far too cheerful.

Joey’s eyes slowly opened to see the inflatable bars of his crib. It was no longer a surprise to him, it didn’t feel alien or wrong to be there. It was a scary thing to consider. Had he already started adjusting to this position?

“I’ll change Lucas first.” Fran said as she lowered the side of the more traditional crib.

It had been a few days since Joey’s last day at school. In that time, as far as he knew, no one had tried to get in touch with him. He had been badgering Ben for any information about what was happening on social media and was told it was all quiet. He didn’t get a chance to use a computer himself, nor had he seen his phone in a few days, so if anyone HAD tried to contact him her wasn’t aware. It would probably be better if they hadn’t though. Joey would much rather everyone at school wipe him from their memories than anything else.

After Lucas was changed and dressed, it was Joey’s turn. He stepped out of the inflatable crib with his soggy diaper hugging his crotch. He wasn’t a bed wetter, so the padding was still warm as he wet after waking up. It was probably why his mom usually changed his younger brother first.

Joey felt a brief period of fresh air against his smooth and sensitive skin. It didn’t last for long though, it was with a depressing inevitability that fresh padding was lifted up and over his waist, taped closed securely and then flattened out by his mom’s hand pressing against the front. He was soon dressed in a onesie that was identical in colour to Lucas and sent downstairs.

Ben was already at the kitchen table. The thirteen-year-old was looking at a comic book in one hand whilst spooning cereal into his mouth with the other. He barely even looked up as he heard the crinkles of his two brothers entering the room. It wasn’t just Joey who was getting used to the new status quo. Ben put his comic down to lift Lucas into one highchair and then held open the tray of the other. Joey still blushed furiously when his younger brother took any part of his babying.

“Thanks.” Joey muttered as the tray was locked into place.

Ben didn’t say anything. He rarely spoke to Joey at all unless it was necessary. He had a permanent look of mild disgust on his face when he had to do anything involved with Joey’s second babyhood. In contrast, he couldn’t have been more helpful with Lucas. He actively volunteered to help look after the baby more than was asked from him.

Breakfast was the same as it usually was. Ben took care of Lucas and fed him, whilst Joey was looked after by his mom. Both the babies were given their bottles afterwards and then left in the highchair until they were taken to the playpen in the living room. It was an extremely predictable routine. Joey wouldn’t say that he liked it, but after what happened at school, he was more than happy to hide away. Similar to wanting to be forgotten by everyone at school, he thought it was ideal not to go outside, to hide away until the madness stopped.

When the tray was unlocked and moved away, Joey slipped off the seat and held on to the edge of the table as he felt a hand on his backside. That was something else that was becoming increasingly common. Random diaper checks, no matter if he had only been recently changed or not. It seemed that his mom didn’t expect him to remain dry for long.

“We need to go shopping.” Fran said as she withdrew her hand a few seconds later.

“You don’t mean…” Joey turned around to look at his mom, “You don’t mean WE as in… me? Right?”

“I do.” Fran replied.

“Nuh uh.” Joey shook his head, “I’ll stay here with Ben.”

“No, you won’t.” Fran said, “You need to come along.”

“But… why?” Joey whined.

Fran didn’t respond with her mouth. Instead, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a pacifier that she seemed to always keep with her and pushed it into Joey’s mouth. The message was clear. She was done listening to the baby’s whines.

Joey considered spitting it out and continuing. He thought about stomping his feet and refusing to move. Just like the baby treatment in general, his mother had a momentum behind her. She wasn’t going to be deflected. Since deciding to try treating Joey like a baby as a way to help him relax it was as if she had become a zealot. Nothing would budge her from her path and Joey was stuck going along with it.

“Good.” Ben said from the table. He was reading his comic again, “I’ll look after Lucas but that’s it.”

“You don’t even need to do that.” Fran replied cheerily, “He’s coming too.”

Ben looked up and smiled widely. It seemed like the most genuine smile Joey had seen him have for a few days. He picked up his comic and left the room. No doubt he was happy for some time alone and without the burden of chores.

“As for you two…” Fran continued, “We’ll get you both dressed in something more appropriate and head out.”

Lucas was lifted on to Fran’s hip with a little bit of difficulty, he was getting bigger seemingly every day, whilst Joey’s hand was taken, and they went upstairs. Ten minutes later they were stood at the front door again. Joey’s fears of going outside certainly hadn’t abated, but he was glad at least that he wouldn’t stick out too much. For sure, his blue shorts didn’t completely hide the diaper bulge underneath, and the red shirt certainly looked a little childish for an eighteen-year-old but compared to some of the other things in his closet now it was as good as he was likely to get.

Joey walked up to the car and felt his knees go weak. He seemed to completely lose the ability to comprehend what he was seeing for a few seconds. On one side of the backseat was Lucas’s car seat, in the same place as it always was, but on the other side…

“It’s good, isn’t it?” Fran said as she opened the door, “It turns out disability aids are perfect for if you have a big baby.”

Joey just stared at the large car seat. In truth, it didn’t look much like his little brother’s. It was, of course, much larger, but it also had more straps on it, and it seemed to be very adjustable. Joey was prodded in the back to make him walk forwards. He did as he was told and climbed into the car. As he sank into the new car seat, he felt his feet hanging an inch or two from the ground. He cringed as he felt his well-padded rear sink into the seat.

“Right, this should be simple enough…” Fran said as she leaned in, “Ben helped me test it yesterday.”

Joey had hoped that maybe his brother hadn’t been aware. He couldn’t believe Ben knew that seat was in the car and he hadn’t said anything. It made Joey wonder what other horrible surprises might be coming in the future. It was becoming increasingly clear that Ben wasn’t “on his side.”

The straps were threaded over and under various parts of Joey. There were a couple over his shoulders, one across the chest, one across the belly and even one coming up between his legs. They all clicked together in a plastic circle; there was no obvious release for them. There were even more restraints for arms and legs but, mercifully, they were left unused. Once everything was clicked together, Fran tightened various bits until Joey was pushed against the back of his new toddler seat, his feet swinging uselessly. Fran declared it to be perfect and looked very happy. Joey, meanwhile, prayed that there were to be no more humiliating surprises. Fran stood back to admire her work and then suddenly looked like she was trying not to laugh.

“You may want to take your paci out, baby.” Fran said as she stood at the open door, “That’s up to you though.”

Joey felt his blood run cold as he belatedly realised that he had kept the pacifier in his mouth all the way from the kitchen to the nursery, and now out to the car. He reached up and plucked it out of his mouth. His face turning as red as his shirt. He looked around at the neighbour’s houses and just prayed that no one was watching. Fran chuckled as she closed the door and a minute or so later, they were on their way to the mall.
