“Anna, have you lost your damn mind!?” Thorn demanded. Now torn between looking at the road and the person holding a gun to her head.

“I’m not leaving her to be taken to Finishing School!” Anna practically screamed, “Not this time!”

“Anna, sweetie, please…” Ryan was slowly moving her way, arms outstretched and arms wide, “Lower the gun.”

“You won’t shoot.” Thorn said dismissively, “Anna, I respect what you are doing, truly I do. I get it. Now put the gun down so we can carry on.”

Anna was stuck. It felt like a tornado was running through her head and scattering all her thoughts. No, of course she couldn’t shoot Thorn. What was she doing? She was threatening the very person who was risking so many lives to get her away from Sallas. Did she really want to risk everything for Jane?

The turning for the gated community was almost level with them now. If she was going to do anything it had to be right that second. With a deflating sigh she dropped the gun on to the front seat next to Thorn.

“Good.” Thorn sighed a deep breath, “I get how you feel and… ANNA!”

If Thorn wasn’t going to stop then Anna was going to force her. As soon as she dropped the gun, she had stood up and run to the other end of the van, she pulled on the handle and opened the back door, there was no traffic behind them, perfect. Anna closed her eyes and jumped. She briefly heard the combined screams of her two companions before she hit the ground and rolled half a dozen times, her dress ripping and tearing on the concrete floor. She immediately knew she was bleeding, from multiple places, but she wasn’t seriously hurt.

The van had screeched to a halt ahead of her. Anna got to her feet and winced as she felt a trickle of blood run down her face. She turned to the entrance of the community, where a very bewildered guard was staring at her, and started to half-limp and half-jog inside. Anna started up the road towards the house that had been her home. The van had turned around and burst through the gate with a crash that made Anna look around. It pulled up alongside Anna and Thorn leaned over. To Anna’s surprise Thorn was actually smiling.

“You’re one crazy bitch!” Thorn called out, “Get in the van!”

“Not without Jane!” Anna called back. She’d just jumped out of a moving vehicle; there was no way she was just going to surrender now.

“I’ll drive you to the house.” Thorn said, “We don’t have time for you to hobble there. That guard was on his radio when I crashed through his gate.”

Anna opened the door and climbed in. Before she could even sit down, she had Ryan’s hands reaching through the window to the back of the van and hugging her tightly. He kept repeatedly asking if she was OK without waiting for him to answer.

“It’s a shame, you’d really well in my organisation.” Thorn shook her head, “Seriously though, you have two minutes.”

“Wait here.” Anna said as they pulled up at the house.

Anna hopped back out of the van and stumbled towards the front door. Adrenaline was probably helping mask the pain as she opened the door and stepped inside. It was unusually quiet. She stepped into the house and looked into the living room. The television was on, showing a standby emergency screen, Jane had probably been watching the broadcast.

“Jane?” Anna called out.

Anna started tearing around the house looking for her friend. She wasn’t downstairs at all; she thumped her way upstairs and wished again that she’d had a chance to change. Anna pushed open each door she came across until she reached the nursery. As the door swung open she heard movement.

Stepping inside, Anna was greeted with a sight that made her stop in her tacks. Jane was kneeling in the crib, a pacifier in her mouth and kept there with a gag. She was looking out at Anna with wide eyes… and she wasn’t alone.

“Well, haven’t you been causing some trouble.” Mr. Sawyer said. He was holding a gun not unlike Thorn’s.

“How did you…” Anna started.

“As soon as your friends blew a hole in the wall of the studio, I had a good idea of what they were after.” Mr. Sawyer was smirking, “Once I got out of the building, I realised that there was only one place you were likely to go. Oh, I’m sure we have people searching everywhere, but I know you, Anna, I know how you work.”

“You know nothing about be.” Anna replied. She clenched her fists.

“Careful now, that temper has got you into trouble before…” Mr. Sawyer said in a sing-song voice, “You make a mistake now and it might be your last. You are a terrorist now, after all. I would be well within my rights to shoot you where you stand as an enemy of the people.”

“Then why don’t you.” Anna gritted her teeth, throwing caution to the wind. She felt so close to her ultimate goal that she was willing to go through anything to get there.

“For the same reason you aren’t a useless crawling overgrown infant.” Mr. Sawyer laughed, “You are still more used to me alive than dead. You are a ferocious little thing, but, at the end of the day, you’re domesticated. You think you want to go out into the world, but I know what is best for you.”

Anna shook her head. Her knees were shaking a little, the adrenaline flowing through her veins was making hard to stand still. Every muscle felt ready to spring into action. She couldn’t believe that even right then, with everything happening that morning, that she was still hearing how a man knew what was best for her.

“What are you going to do?” Anna asked as she eyed the gun that was pointed at her.

“That depends on you.” Mr. Sawyer replied, “Are you going to be a good girl and come with me? I assure you that the alternative is not very pleasant.”

Mr. Sawyer gave his gun a little wave as he spoke. Anna thought through everything that was happening. It seemed like the man in the nursery was alone, it also seemed like he didn’t know that she wasn’t. Ryan and Thorn were outside, how long would they wait before coming in and looking for her? She saw that Mr. Sawyer had a radio sitting on the windowsill next to him. It seemed likely that he would’ve called for backup as soon as he heard Anna coming into the house. With a cold feeling, Anna realised that she had led the head of The Rose Resistance right into an ambush in which there could be no escape. She swallowed.

One thing Anna knew about men from Sallas was that they chronically underestimated women. Their belief that they were superior in every way meant that they didn’t think women were capable of subverting their expectations. Anna had to try it, she had to get herself and Anna out of the room as soon as possible.

“Fine.” Anna said. She let shoulders slump down, “You win.”

“I know I do.” Mr. Sawyer replied smugly, “Come on, we’re going downstairs to wait for your special taxi.”

“Hold on.” Anna said, “Mr. Sawyer… I’ve been in this diaper a while and I really, really need a change. Would you mind if I…?”

Mr. Sawyer’s look of disgust was almost strong enough to knock Anna backwards. He seemed to debate the idea in his head, but Anna knew he wouldn’t be keen to share a vehicle with her when she smelled the way she did.

“Sure.” Mr. Sawyer said, “But I’m going to be watching. Any sudden movements and that’ll be the last diaper you ever wear.”

Anna swallowed, making sure to exaggerate how obvious her fear was, and then nodded her head. She hopped up on to the changing table as Mr. Sawyer stood a foot away. Anna made a big show of trying to reach down to her diaper but the dress getting in the way.

“Mr. Sawyer, Sir, would it be OK if Jane helped?” Anna asked. She softened her voice and even twitched her mouth into a quick smile, anything to disarm the man standing over her, “Or maybe you could…”

“No.” Mr. Sawyer looked at Anna’s diaper area and sneered. Anna had to imagine it didn’t look pretty down there at all, “You can have Jane.”

Anna felt her heart leap as Mr. Sawyer stood on the release for the side of the crib and let it rattle down. Jane, gagged by the pacifier, hesitantly shifted forwards and down on to her feet. She looked from Anna to Mr. Sawyer. The armed man raised his hands and stepped back to allow Jane to pass. As soon as Anna saw her friend close up, she could see how Jane had been crying.

“Just make it quick.” Mr. Sawyer said as he went across to the window and pulled back a curtain to look outside. Thankfully the nursery faced the rear of the house.

With Mr. Sawyer looking out the window, presumably trying to see if the people he called were arriving, Anna tried to send a silent message to Jane. The very used padding was opened up and even Jane flinched away slightly at what she saw inside. Anna waved her hand to get Jane’s attention, then looked down towards her diaper, then quickly jerked her head at Mr. Sawyer. Jane frowned.

“Come on…” Anna mouthed.

After repeating the motion a couple of times, it seemed Jane had got the message. Her puffy pink eyes opened wider in surprise.

“When he comes back over.” Anna mouthed as slowly and clearly as she dared.

Jane nodded her head and set to work wiping Anna’s incredibly soiled diaper area. Anna was intensely aware of the time. At any second, she might hear more footsteps coming inside, giving the game away to Mr. Sawyer. Even worse was the possibility of the black government cars arriving. If that happened, they would all be trapped.

“It’s really a shame that it’s come to this.” Mr. Sawyer said as he moved the curtain back into place, “You and Ryan, I mean. We gave you everything you could want, and it still wasn’t enough.”

Anna had her head tilted to the side. She was waiting for the most opportune moment; they wouldn’t get a second shot at this. Her skin was mostly wiped clean, and she noticed that Jane had slowed down as well.

“I got you this house, your husband got a job, you both got fame… What more could you possibly ask for?” Mr. Sawyer had turned and was slowly walking towards the table.

Anna’s heartrate got faster with every step that Mr. Sawyer took. She tensed up her muscles as she felt Jane’s hands grab hold of the still open dirty diaper. The man moved across the rug, closer and closer until…

Anna felt Jane pulling on the diaper. She lifted herself up and it was slid out from underneath her. In one fluid motion, Jane picked up the disgusting disposable and threw it, messy side first, at Mr. Sawyer. He saw it coming too late, his hands couldn’t rise up in time, the diaper hit him square in the face as he screamed at the horror. This was the moment.

Without hesitation, Anna got to her feet on the changing table and launched herself at Mr. Sawyer. Like a missile, she slammed into his chest and speared him backwards. The gun went off, a bullet shooting up into the ceiling of the room before it was knocked clear of the government man as he impacted the ground. The dirty diaper was still pressed against his face as Anna straddled him. She started punching down into the padding, picturing Mr. Sawyer’s smirking face. She punched until he stopped resisting, she would’ve continued too, but Jane had pulled her off.

The diaper finally slipped from his face revealing a very disgusting scene indeed. It was fortunate that Jane had been given enough time to clean up the large amounts of muck that had still been on Anna. Mr. Sawyer wasn’t moving, it was hard to see his face underneath the former contents of the diaper as his head rolled to the side.
