“No. Absolutely not.” Ryan said.
“Ryan…” Anna sighed.
“We need to talk about this.” Jane, caught in the middle, tried to mediate.
Anna had just put the phone down and explained what Thorn had said to her husband and Jane. With each word she saw Ryan’s expression grow darker. Towards the end of the plan, he had stood up and started pacing up and down.
“Talk?” Ryan shook his head, “There’s nothing to talk about. I refuse.”
“It could be our only shot!” Anna countered loudly.
“And what a shot it is!” Ryan laughed harshly, “What would you say the odds were? One hundred to one? One THOUSAND to one?”
“It’s not that bad…” Anna said a little more quietly. She implicitly conceded that the odds weren’t in her favour.
“We are comfortable here!” Ryan raised his arms to indicate the kitchen, “Do you really think we could have better than this out there? As refugees in a world we know nothing about?”
“And how long are we safe?” Anna demanded loudly. She hit the table and caused Jane to jump in her seat, “We are here at the mercy of Sallas, and they can take that away at any moment. The second we are no longer useful we will be tossed to the side. What happens then?”
“Please, can we just sit down and talk.” Jane asked. She looked a little distressed.
Anna gave Ryan a look and he rolled his eyes. After getting himself a drink of water, letting the tension in the air simmer, he sat back at the table. His hand was shaking a little bit. Jane looked between the two as if she was afraid they were about to flip the table and go after each other.
“I’m serious.” Ryan said in his normal speaking voice, “This is insane.”
“What happens if we don’t do it?” Jane asked quietly.
“I don’t know.” Anna shrugged her shoulders, “Thorn didn’t say. She just said she would call back in half an hour for our answer. I think that if we say no… she may stop contacting us.”
“Good!” Ryan replied a little too loudly, “Sorry, Jane. I just mean… We’ve tried to help her, and this is the best she can give in return?”
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed…” Anna said bitterly, “But Sallas is not exactly an easy place to get out of.”
Ryan lifted his hands to his face. Anna said nothing. Until she had been presented with the opportunity, she really didn’t know what she would do if she was presented with an actual plan of escape. It didn’t seem likely to work, failure would almost certainly mean being sent to Finishing School at a minimum, but despite these facts, Anna knew she wouldn’t turn it down. It may have been the most selfish thing in the world, but if that meant risking Ryan and Jane as well, she would do it. She loved them both, she didn’t want to hurt them, but she needed to get out of Sallas with every fibre of her being.
“There has to be a better plan.” Ryan finally said.
“There isn’t.” Anna replied.
“Jane, where do you stand on this lunacy?” Ryan turned to the third person at the table.
Jane looked startled. It seemed she was still getting used to people asking her opinion on anything. She looked back and forth; Anna could practically see her brain trying to work out an answer that didn’t make anybody mad. She almost seemed on the verge of tears as her brain tried to find something that would please both Ryan and Anna.
“I, erm…” Jane said, “Anna’s told me about places outside Sallas and I… Well, they sound wonderful…”
“I don’t disagree.” Ryan said, “But this is insane. An uprising? In the middle of Kingston? Designed to get us separated from our escorts, and then a run to the coast? Can Thorn even pull that off?”
“She’s done pretty big stuff.” Anna said.
They had all seen the news. It seemed that at least once a month The Rose Resistance was pulling off some major act of “terrorism” as the reporters called it. Of course, one man’s terrorist was another woman’s freedom fighter. As big as some of The Rose Resistance’s acts had been, however, this seemed like an order of magnitude bigger.
Thorn had told Anna that there would be chaos in the streets. That once the broadcast was complete, the three of them would be whisked away, hopefully before the authorities could get a handle on the situation. Anna had no idea how many people Thorn commanded or if it would be enough, but it seemed a lot of people were going to risk their lives to get Anna out. She really didn’t think she was worth it, but Thorn insisted the value of having Anna outside the country was worth rolling the dice.
“How long have we got?” Ryan asked.
“She’ll call back in about twenty minutes.” Anna replied as she looked at the clock. Each tick seemed to ramp up the pressure.
Anna shifted uncomfortably in her seat and felt her diaper becoming wetter yet again. It wasn’t that she had no control over it, but when in an agitated or excited state it was something that could slip her mind. She tried not to let herself think that it made her less of a person.
“Think about what you’re risking.” Ryan said seriously.
“I know what I’m risking.” Anna replied, “Look, if either of you don’t want to take part, maybe we could find some way of making it seem like you had no idea or something. Maybe they could tie you up and…”
“I want to go.” Jane said. She interrupted Anna as if she might lose her opportunity to leave, that if she didn’t speak up right then she might forget the words altogether.
“You already know I’ll go wherever you go.” Ryan said. He sighed, Anna could see that he saw his love for her as a burden more than anything at that particular moment, “I just want you to really think about this.”
Anna swallowed. She looked down at the phone in front of her as her mind whirled. She was at the ultimate crossroad. One path led to a comfortable but stifled life, a beautiful cage that she would be taken out of and paraded for the people of Sallas like a rare bird, one where she was safe as long as she was useful. The other path led into the unknown. It led to danger. It was filled with spiked pits, arrow traps, and boulders ready to crush her, and there, right at the very far end, was the faintest glimmer of a better life. It’s dazzling brilliance promising everything she had ever dreamed of if she had the bravery to walk that way.
The only sound in the room was the ticking clock. It felt unfair. If it had been just her and her alone, this would’ve been easy. Her desperation to leave might end up burning her alive, but at least she wouldn’t hurt anyone else. With Jane and Ryan, it wasn’t just her that would get caught in the inferno. In some ways she hated that her brain instantly told her that it was a risk worth taking. That she would risk burning the world for a chance at freedom. It was selfish, she knew that.
The sensible choice would be to tell Thorn no. To tell her to find a way that didn’t risk everyone else, to ask her if she was insane for thinking this plan would work. That would be what a rational mind would say. It would look at the odds and not even think about it. But if Sallas had been made out of rationality, none of it would’ve been happening at all. It was a deeply irrational country, so perhaps being sensible would be a detriment.
When the phone rang everyone in the kitchen was taken by surprise. No doubt they were all lost in their own thoughts. Anna picked up the phone and answered it.
“Well?” Thorn asked form the other side without any preamble.
“We’ll do it.” Anna replied. She looked at Ryan who looked right back at her. Jane’s hands went to her mouth.
“Good.” Thorn replied. For as much of a decision as this had been for the people around the kitchen table, it seemed that Thorn had barely given it a thought, “We’ll be in touch with more information.”
Just like that, the call was ended. Anna continued holding it against her ear. She didn’t know what she expected or wanted, maybe just some comforting words from the leader of the resistance that she was throwing her lot in with. It was done. What she had just locked herself into, she couldn’t be sure, all she knew was that one way or the other the lives of the three people at the table were going to change in a big way.
---
Anna woke up feeling a combination of dread, panic and excitement. One way or the other her life, along with Jane’s and Ryan’s, was going to change for good. Thorn had called the previous evening and told her exactly what was going to happen, told her to be ready because they would only get one shot at it.
“I’m shocked you managed to sleep.” Ryan said.
Anna, lying on her back, let her head fall to the side, where Ryan lying and staring at the ceiling. He indeed did look like he had been awake most of the night. The crib meant there wasn’t a lot of room, Anna rolled over and draped her arm across Ryan’s chest, her diaper was damp as it pressed against her husband’s hip. She let out a sigh and, just for a few moments, enjoyed the peace and quiet.
“It’s going to be OK.” Anna said quietly.
“I wish I had your confidence.” Ryan replied. He lifted an arm and placed it on Anna’s back, “How long have we got?”
“Thorn said the shoot was set for midday.” Anna said, “I don’t know when they’ll be coming to get us. Remember, we aren’t supposed to know about it so be appropriately shocked when they turn up.”
Anna felt Ryan’s chest rise and fall as he let out a deep sigh. He didn’t need to say anything, she knew that if it was up to him, they would have nothing to do with the plan. It said a lot about his love for her that he hadn’t put his foot down harder. Sure, they’d discussed it, nearly every night, exhaustively, but it always came down to Anna saying she needed to do it and Ryan nodding his head.
They’d been together and married for a little while by then. Forced together through convenience for their families and happenstance, made to live together despite being strangers. Yet, over time, Anna was certain she had fallen in love with him. It may have been chance that brought them together, but that didn’t make the feelings that had blossomed any less real. Knowing it might be their final day together if things didn’t go there way, as seemed likely, Anna knew she had to tell Ryan how she felt.
“Ryan…” Anna said quietly. She could feel her chest tightening; an embarrassment flushed through her. To be so vulnerable by choice was not easy at all, even harder since their stint in the daycare had come within inches of seemingly breaking her. Fear, as well, started rearing its ugly head. A fear of rejection, a fear that she was going to tell Ryan how she felt, only to find out he didn’t feel the same. Could she blame him if he didn’t? After all she had put him through…
“Anna?” Ryan asked. He shifted position so that he was on his side and looking Anna in the eyes. His hands on her hips, thumbs gently fiddling with the papery waistband of the diaper she needed to change.
“I…” Anna swallowed around a lump in her throat that seemed to try to keep the words inside her, “I… I love you.”
Anna’s heart raced as a half-second of silence seemed to stretch out into infinity. It seemed to take forever for Ryan to start smiling, or maybe it was only a second, it was hard to tell. Ryan pressed himself closer to Anna. She breathed deeply, inhaling his smell.
“I love you too.” Ryan replied, “We may not have chosen this marriage, but I’m very glad we have it.”
Anna opened her mouth. Maybe she was going to say something, maybe she was going to kiss her husband, she never got the chance to find out what she was going to do as the door to the bedroom flew open.
“Anna! Ryan! You-… Oh… Sorry.” Jane was stood in the doorway, looking breathless and in a diaper that was sagging well past the point she should’ve been changed. A blush crept across her face, and she turned to face away from them. If Anna hadn’t been so alarmed by the tone of her shouts, she would’ve found it amusing.
“Jane? What is it?” Anna said as she sat up.
“They’re coming!” Jane said, “I saw their cars parking outside!”
“Already?” Anna felt her pulse quicken, “Shit. I was hoping we’d have more time.”
“Is… Is it really happening?” Jane asked, turning back around, “Are we going to…”
“Yes.” Ryan replied.
Anna looked at her husband and saw steely determination. She felt her heart swell with pride but seeing him looking so ready for action did a lot to help calm her racing mind down. They quickly ran through what was going to happen as they got ready to leave, it didn’t take long. All they knew was that they were going to be filming something today, that Thorn had given them a new script to read out, and that there was something big planned, partly as an act of rebellion, but also to get Anna, Ryan and Jane to the coast.
When the knock on the door came, Ryan reminded everyone to act like they didn’t know the men for the government were coming, or what was going to happen next. Anna was changing Jane’s diaper in the nursery when the front door was opened. Usually, they talked whilst doing these things, it helped to soften the potential embarrassment, this time both the women were silent. Their ears were trained on the doorway, listening to the voices downstairs.
“Come on.” Anna said as she finished taping the diaper, “We better get a move on.”
Jane slid off the table and put on her maid outfit. As far as Mr. Sawyer or any of the men with him knew, Jane was still a regressed baby maid, they needed to keep the charade up even though it embarrassed Jane all the more. Anna climbed up on the table and quickly changed herself, something she didn’t want to be caught doing. No sooner had she finished placing the final tape than there was a shout from downstairs.
“Anna!” Ryan called, “Mr. Sawyer needs us.”
“Be there in a second!” Anna shouted back. She turned to Jane and dropped her voice, “Are you ready?”
Jane nodded and smiled a nervous smile. Anna nodded her head as well and patted her friend on the shoulder. She picked up the diaper bag that was ostensibly for them both and quickly slipped the regression antidote injections into a side pocket. If this somehow worked, they would need them for Jane, at least until whatever they did at the Finishing School wore off for good or their destination country could manufacture some more. They would just have to take the risk that someone might check the bag. If the needles were found it surely wouldn’t take the government long to work out what they were for, it was a chance that they had to take.
Anna quickly threw on a dress that she loathed but knew Mr. Sawyer would like. It was a very pink number, with frills everywhere that they could be fit. It was a strategic choice, Anna wanted to butter up the men who had come for them, to pretend to be the good little girl they wanted.
“Very nice, very nice…” Mr. Sawyer smirked and nodded his head as Anna came down the stairs. Her diaper clearly visible as her dress flared out from the petticoat underneath it, “I see that stint in the daycare really put her in her place.”
“Yeah.” Ryan replied with an uneasy laugh, “She’s been… good.”
Jane followed Anna downstairs. They arrived at the bottom and waited to be told what was going on. Anna felt like she might throw up if she thought too much about what was to come. It was hard enough to have Mr. Sawyer and his men looking at her, she kept her own eyes firmly on the ground.
“So, what’s the plan?” Ryan asked. His attempts to sound conversational failing completely.
“Oh, we have a spot on a morning TV show for you.” Mr. Sawyer said, “You’ve heard of This Morning in Sallas I take it?”
“Yeah, I sometimes watch it with breakfast.” Ryan replied.
“You do?” Mr. Sawyer let out his distinctive bark of dismissive laughter, “It’s a load of shit. It is, however, watched by millions of people every morning. A prime spot for the nation’s favourite little girl.”
“L-Live TV?” Anna asked. Her eyes widened.
“That’s right.” Mr. Sawyer replied, “An interview with Ryan whilst you put on a show.”
“A show?” Anna frowned.
“All will become clear.” Mr. Sawyer walked forwards and pinched Anna’s cheek, “Best not to worry your pretty face about it, you’ll get wrinkles.”
Anna should’ve guessed it would be live. If Thorn and The Rose Resistance were planning something, it would need to be broadcast. That said, the speech she had been given to memorise suddenly felt a lot more daunting, knowing she would be looking into the lens of a camera that had millions of people staring back. Maybe this was a bad idea after all…
“What do you think you’re doing?” Mr. Sawyer was frowning.
At first, Anna thought the government man was talking to her and she was about to answer until she saw that he was actually looking at Jane right behind her. It was fortunate that Jane remembered that she was supposed to be regressed and subservient still, she didn’t reply.
“She’s getting ready?” Ryan phrased his statement like a question, as if he himself wasn’t sure.
“For what?” Mr. Sawyer asked.
“Well, I…” Ryan started.
“Your maid is not required.” Mr. Sawyer interrupted, “She’ll be staying here.”
Anna opened her mouth to speak but managed to stop herself. They had been assured by Thorn that all three of them would be together for the breakout. Anna turned to look at her friend, she’d gone white as a sheet. She turned back to Ryan, her eyes silently sending him the message to do something.
“I’m not sure I want to leave her here alone…” Ryan said. Anna could see that he was making the sentence up as he went along, “She broke something a few days ago and I want to supervise her.”
“Not a problem.” Mr. Sawyer shrugged, “We can have a man stay and watch her.”
“No!” Jane blurted out before she could stop herself.
“What did you…” Mr. Sawyer looked equal parts shocked and furious that Jane would talk back.
The dangerous rage Mr. Sawyer had was distracted when Ryan stepped forwards and quickly turned Jane around on the stairs. He started spanking her, harder than Anna imagined he could, and she jerked back with each connection, her own rear end tingling with the memories of what had happened at the daycare. By the time Ryan was finished, Jane was crying though Anna thought that wasn’t necessarily from the pain of the punishment.
“You need to watch that.” Mr. Sawyer said to Ryan, “If you want, we could take her back to Finishing School for some… fine tuning.”
“It’s fine.” Ryan quickly said, “I’m learning to use a firmer hand.”
“Well, look at that!” Mr. Sawyer clapped his hands together and laughed, “We really have turned you into the model family. Keep it up and you might even get your bed back.”
The men around Ryan laughed. Anna knew that the crib left in Ryan’s room was a message and a reminder, clearly it wasn’t a secret either as Mr. Sawyer’s hangers on all appeared to know about it. The government man told his men to stay with the small family until they were ready to go, he made it clear he didn’t want to wait long.
“Jane, I’m…” Anna muttered as she leaned down to finish putting on her shoe.
It wasn’t clear if Jane heard Anna. She was still face down on the bottom stairs and crying loudly. It was all Anna could do to not burst into tears herself. The scrutiny from the other men in the hallway made it difficult, but Anna reached down and squeezed Jane’s hand as she pushed herself up.
“It’s… OK.” Jane choked out.
“I…” Anna started.
“Go.” Jane whispered, “Live your life. I know you’ll make it.”
Anna’s eyes shimmered with tears as Ryan took her hand and led her away form Jane. With her shoes on there was just no reason to delay any further and they had to move before the men got suspicious. Anna stumbled forwards, looking back over her shoulder as Jane remained on the stairs.
For the second time, Anna felt like she was abandoning her only friend to a fate worse than death. The door was closed as she was dragged outside leaving Jane alone in the house. It seemed like her fate would be clear. If Anna and Ryan escaped, then Jane would no doubt be punished. Her access to the medicine would come to an end and she would be in a much worse position. It the escape failed, then Jane would no doubt be punished along with the couple. There was no good outcome for her.
Anna started sobbing and she couldn’t stop no matter how much the men around her glowered. She didn’t want to act like that day was different from any other, but how could she not? She was put into the car next to Ryan who quickly hugged her, she leaned into it for the comfort.
“Don’t cry.” Mr. Sawyer said as he stepped into the front seat, “It will make your eyes puffy and you want to look your best for the camera, right?”
It was difficult for Anna to stop but she eventually quietened down to an occasional sniffle as she looked out the window. Her mind should’ve been on what was about to happen, instead it was on what she had left behind at the house. She pictured Jane, all alone, sitting on the stairs still and waiting for the hammer to fall on her one way or another. If that girl had any luck, it was all bad.
The car made its way into Kingston. Anna kept trying to see any signs of preparation, any hint of what was likely to be a cataclysmic day in the capital city but could discern nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe it had all been called off without word getting to Anna and she had been left out to dry. Or maybe this had been Thorn’s plan all along, get Anna to deliver the speech with no help to come. Anna started to wonder just how much faith she could put in an organisation that she knew so little about.
The television studio was a big building. It had clearly received a lot of funding from the government as it was like a shining diamond surrounded by an area that was only one step up from abandoned. It was another showpiece, like so many of the big important places, designed to give a very different idea about the country compared to the reality.
The cars pulled up outside the large glass-fronted exterior and everyone stepped out. Anna quickly looked for and grabbed on to Ryan’s hand as they were led through the entrance lobby, there were plenty of people there, all staring, some whispering to colleagues. Anna still couldn’t get over how everyone recognised her face from all the adverts she had filmed. Without being let out of the gated community very often, it was very difficult to accept the reality that she was a celebrity of sorts, the face of a totalitarian regime she despised.
“Come on, we don’t have too long before you’re going on air.” Mr. Sawyer said.
As they walked through the lobby Anna’s dress felt even more revealing than back at home. The diaper underneath it was damp, and she knew that anyone who looked her way would see as much. She looked up at a television that was hanging above the reception desk and saw the very show she was going to appear on. Two friendly male presenters presenting largely non-threatening topics of news and light entertainment to the masses. As she walked by, she saw the camera pull back to show a playpen whilst the presenters talked about upcoming guests, she shuddered.
Anna was the last person to cram into a small corridor leading away from the reception. Mr. Sawyer was at the front of the group, walking alongside an excitable young man with a clipboard who kept alternating speaking to Mr. Sawyer with answering someone only he could hear on the headset he wore. Anna and Ryan came next, holding hands tighter than they’d ever done before, and then two huge guards brought up the rear. Anna could feel these henchmen’s gaze focused on her and could feel her resentment grow.
They stepped through another couple of doors until they must’ve been somewhere near the back of the building. There were various dressing and production rooms, and Anna was led into one of them. It was very basic inside. A vanity mirror and table were set up, a few comfortable looking couches and a glass table with magazines on it. In the corner was a changing table.
“You two have about twenty minutes to get ready.” Mr. Sawyer said as he looked at his watch, “Make the most of it. Oh, and Ryan? When you change her, make sure to give her these…”
Mr. Sawyer reached into his pocket and pulled out two silver foil packets. They were indented with bullet-shaped objects inside. Anna shivered, she’d experienced suppositories before, and she knew that’s what was inside the packets.
“But, Mr. Sawyer…” Ryan started to object.
“Yes, yes, I know they will likely take effect before we leave.” Mr. Sawyer waved away the concerns, “Our goal here is to show Sallas exactly what a good girl looks like, that includes her being good when she’s… uncomfortable. Understood?”
Anna could see that Ryan wanted to respond. The last thing either of them wanted to do was create more drama and tension before the escape. At the same time, Anna was acutely aware how much harder it was to move quickly if her tummy was hurting, or if she had a full diaper.
“Wayne, stay in here and make sure it’s done.” Mr. Sawyer ordered before leaving the room.
The entourage left with just Wayne remaining. He stood in the far corner and glared at the couple as If he already expected that they were up to no good. Anna took a deep breath as Ryan looked down at the suppositories. Anna shrugged and started taking off her dress, keeping her back to the government man.
“Do you really have to be here?” Ryan asked him.
“I’ll step outside once I see those suppositories go in.” Wayne replied.
Anna hopped up on to the changing table. She didn’t feel too embarrassed about being nearly naked or having her diaper changed in the presence of a stranger, it had happened too often at that point. She was just hoping that Ryan would get it done with as quickly as possible. She wanted at least a little time without being watched to compose herself.
The front of the only slightly damp diaper came down. Ryan balled it up and threw it away after cleaning Anna with some baby wipes. He placed a new diaper underneath Anna’s butt, and she had to do her best not to laugh. He was still so awkward when it came to changing her. He was “supposed” to have been doing it for some time, but obviously Anna had been doing it herself for the most part. His timidity was actually quite cute.
Ryan ripped open the first of the foil packets and Wayne came stalking over. Anna looked away as he stared at her private parts, though he seemed to take no joy from doing so. It seemed he was very dedicated to the job, watching as the first bullet shaped suppository, pre-lubed, was pressed against her exit hole.
It was uncomfortable. The suppository was small, but Anna had a tough time relaxing, for the obvious reasons. She could feel her bowels wanting to expel the intruder as soon as it was nestled inside her, she had to work to stop that from happening as it melted. The first one was soon followed by the second which was only a little easier as she knew what to expect.
“Happy?” Ryan asked once his finger withdrew from Anna’s ass.
“Just make sure she keeps that diaper clean until you’re out there.” Wayne grunted. He gave Anna a look of disgust before turning and leaving.
The dressing room was silent as Anna sat back up and put her dress on. It still didn’t feel real, that one way or another their lives would be completely and irrevocably changed in such a short amount of time. Anna sat on the edge of the table, wincing slightly as the last of her “medicine” dissolved. Ryan went across and sat on the couch. He picked up a sheet of paper from the table with one hand and rubbed his forehead with the other.
“I’ve been so worried about you-know-what, that I’ve completely forgotten to worry about the fact we’re going on live TV.” Ryan said as he looked over the paper.
“What is it?” Anna asked.
“A script.” Ryan replied, “What they’re going to ask, what I’m supposed to say…”
“We won’t need that then.” Anna replied.
Ryan looked at Anna. He nodded his head and put the paper back down. The plan with Thorn was meant to start just a minute or so after Anna went on to the set, she hadn’t been told much more than that.
“Are you ready?” Ryan asked. He seemed full of nervous energy as he stood up and walked back to the changing table. He put his hands on Anna’s hips and leaned his head against hers.
“As I’ll ever be.” Anna replied, “I just want to get it over with, you know?”
Anna could feel that a combination of the suppositories and her anxiety was upsetting her digestive system. She could feel butterflies fluttering, her stomach churning, and she felt like she was going to throw up.
“I feel terrible about Jane.” Ryuan said quietly.
“Don’t.” Anna replied. She closed her eyes and let out a deep breath, “I said I’d get her out. I feel like we’re abandoning her.”
“There’s not a lot we can do.” Ryan said, “Maybe, if we get abroad, we could lobby politicians or something, get them to give Jane to us.”
Anna looked at Ryan with clear scepticism. She was about to ask if he really thought the Sallas government would bow to such pressure when there was a knock on the door. Ryan instinctively stepped back, as if he might get in trouble for showing affection to his wife.
“Five minutes.” A voice on the other side called out.
“This is it then.” Ryan said to Anna, “The final countdown.”
