Chapter 4
Hopes and Dreams

Chapter Description: After indulging in another fantastic home-cooked meal, Vicky gathered a few of her favorite toys for the impending playdate. They headed to the car, and after Mommy fastened Vicky snugly into a car-seat fit for a kindergartener, the pair began the short drive to Madison’s house. Vicky always loved playing with Maddy; they were the best of friends as far back as she could remember. But today was no ordinary visit: today was Maddy’s birthday! She was so excited to see her friend’s reaction to the gift she’d picked out for her.

“Vicky,” came a soothing voice, “wake up. We’re visiting Maddy’s house today, remember? Let’s get you out of those PJs and have some breakfast.”

“Okay Mommy,” came the mumbled reply.

A little girl – perhaps five years old – sat up and yawned in her bed. Her mother helped her get up, and they headed to the bathroom. “You’re still tired,” Mother reasoned, “so let me help you get dressed.”

“Thanks Mommy.”

As Mom dressed her, Vicky observed herself in the mirror on the wall. Her long pajamas were a cozy blue, speckled with bright white stars. Mom slipped off Vicky’s shirt, allowing fresh air to brush across her tummy. She was giggling at this as Mom tugged Vicky’s pajama pants gently to the floor. Underneath was a pair of Hopes, with five glistening stars on the front. Vicky looked up at her Mom with a smile. “I stayed dry again, Mommy!”

“Good job, sweetie.”

Mom exchanged the nighttime underwear for a pair of pink cotton panties with Vicky’s favorite cartoon character - Piglet - sewn in; she set aside the unsullied protection for next time. Next she slides a yellow dress over Vicky’s head, sliding her arms into place. It was one of Vicky’s favorite dresses for playdates, as the floral pattern matched her hair color. On that thought, Vicky spoke up. “Do my hair next, Mommy! The way you do it on Sundays.”

Mom chuckled. “I’m getting there, honey.”

Vicky’s hair, a delicate shade of strawberry blonde, was a little frizzy in the morning. But after Mom took her special comb to it, it looked straight and shiny. Mom styled it to Vicky’s liking in a chin-length bob, keeping it in place with a bit of spray and adding a sunny hairclip to complete the picture.

Next came the shoes: Mary Janes, to complete the picture of innocence. “Cute as a button,” Mommy chimed as she tapped Vicky on the nose. “Now then sweetie, what would you like for breakfast?”

After indulging in another fantastic home-cooked meal, Vicky gathered a few of her favorite toys for the impending playdate.

Before long they pulled into the driveway of Maddy’s house. Vicky knocked politely on the front door, eager to see her playmate. Maddy’s mother answered and looked down at Vicky affectionately. “Why hello, Vicky! My, you’re getting so big these days!” Vicky beamed at the presumed compliment. “Maddy’s in the living room, I’m sure she’ll be happy to see you!” Grinning ear-to-ear, Vicky bolted to the den, birthday gift in hand.

When she laid eyes on Maddy, young Vicky dropped the lavishly decorated parcel like a hot coal.

There was Maddy alright: sucking on a hot pink pacifier, wearing a cute yellow onesie, and crinkling as she crawled giddily toward her friend.

“Wh…what’s going on?” stammered the terrified Vicky.

“So glad your little girl could come visit today,” remarked Maddy’s mom in a sweet, yet eerie tone.

“Of course!” responded Mommy in a similar strain, “There’s no way we’d miss your little angel’s 2nd birthday—especially since she’ll be coming to Vicky’s in a couple of months!”

But Mommy, Vicky wanted to shout, I’m much older than that! I’m not two years old, I’m…I’m…

The poor girl found that no matter how she struggled, no words came out of her mouth. Just then she felt a strange rustling underneath her yellow dress. Lifting it up, she observed in horror as her Piglet panties thickened and expanded, transforming ultimately into a pair of Hopes spangled with five stars. No, no, no…dis not wite at awl! Me not…bosta be…dis widdle… Each passing second made it harder to think—and to make matters worse, Vicky noticed a warm wetness spreading in her diaper. At this she began to cry, not knowing what else to do.

After a few seconds one of the five stars faded; then another; then yet another. “Uh-oh, looks like your little angel’s had an accident,” teased Maddy’s mom. “Not a problem,” said Mommy, “I brought a few spares.”

Vicky’s mind was getting hazier with each passing moment. As another star faded, leaving her only a two-year-old, the now-toddler’s clothing rearranged itself as a purple onesie adorned with Piglet print. Her crying lessened as the crawling Maddy finally reached her, smiling. Maddy took the pacifier out of her own mouth, giggled, and placed it in Vicky’s. As she suckled the rubber nipple, and the warm wet flow continued, Vicky had a single clear thought:

No, I’m not two years old at all…

…Not for another two months.

After this her eyes glazed over, her adult intelligence replaced with the innocence of infancy. And little baby Maddy laughed. And laughed. And laughed. And LAUGHED, and--!

***

Vicky awoke screaming in her bed. Gasping for air, she tried to calm herself. That wasn’t real, right? That was a nightmare, right? Yes. And what a bizarre nightmare it was! She leaned over in bed to glance at her vanity mirror, just to make sure she was still twelve—and thank goodness, she was. Vicky might even be okay with being a five-year-old again, but she certainly didn’t want to revisit her toddlerhood…did she? Now she was even more terrified, not knowing the answer to what should be such a simple question.

Vicky’s mother burst into the room. “Vicky, Sweetie, are you alright? I heard you screaming in your sleep. Did you have a bad dream?” Vicky nodded uneasily, still shaken by the images in her head. “Do you want to talk about it?” Vicky vehemently shook her head “no”—there was no way Mommy, er, Mom, would understand.

Just then Vicky realized something else: her pants were soaking wet! “Mommy, I…” she started. “I know honey, I could tell as soon as I walked in. I’ll need to change your sheets. Why you didn’t wear protection tonight is beyond me, but we’ll talk about it later. Just go clean yourself up, and put these on for the rest of the night just in case.” She handed Vicky a clean pair of Hopes, twelve stars twinkling on the front. Wordlessly, the preteen went to the bathroom to change.

So I guess I really am a bed wetter now, Vicky brooded. Up until tonight, all of her encounters with Hopes were just “intentional accidents”, but this event proved that in this reality, Vicky wouldn’t always have control. Then she remembered her promise to Maddy, that she would wear them to school in the morning. This realization now carried a terrifying subtext: if something scared her badly enough, she might wet during the day. And according to the manual, there’s no telling what might happen. Besides, she didn’t want to be even younger…

…but why not, exactly? Each time she regressed, Vicky had more and more fun than she could ever recall having, even when she was a kid for real. And Maddie would always be there for her, so she’d never be lonely. Plus, if she was REALLY little Tommy wouldn’t be able to boss her around anymore…

…What the hell am I thinking? It was obvious now, using Hopes was definitely affecting Vicky’s thought patterns. Though she knew it was illogical since her life was no longer unhappy, something inside Victoria was pushing her to regress even further. It was getting harder for her to tell what exactly she really wanted.

She finished cleaning herself up, and after putting on a fresh set of long pajamas, Vicky took a long, hard look at herself in the mirror.

“What if I’m not doing this for the reasons I thought? What if I want more than just an escape – from depression, perversion, stress…from hopelessness?

“What if I just want to be little…for its own sake?”

Not patient enough to wait for her new bedspread, Vicky took to the couch for the remainder of the night. Before drifting off to sleep, she vowed to discuss this matter with Maddy in the morning and decide what exactly she wants her future to be.

For better or worse, she didn’t get the chance to have that conversation. No, there was something much more interesting in store for this unwitting little girl.
