When Aaron opened his eyes, he found himself facing three horizontal slits of light. He tried to move, but his body was hemmed in on all sides by a smooth metallic wall, as if he had been jammed into a sardine can.
A loud, jarring bell went off above his head. Startled, he slammed himself forward with all his strength. The door in front of him swung open, and he tumbled into a hallway swarming with little kids. A flurry of books, folders, overcoats and assorted knick-knacks rained down on him.
"You idiot! You almost fell onto me!"
"Excuse me, excuse me, coming thru"¦"
"Aren"t you going to help him up?"
"What was he doing in that locker?"
"It"s so cool! How did he squeeze in there?"
"Isn"t that the new first grader from Mrs. Linda"s class?"
"Is anyone going to help him up?"
Aaron blinked up at the knot of faces that had gathered above him. "You can see me?"
That drew loud peals of laughter and much giggling.
"He"s so funny!"
"He"s silly!"
"He must be the class clown!"
"Pardon me." That voice sounded familiar. Aaron watched a little girl elbow her way thru the crowd. She stretched out her hand and helped him to his feet. "Are you okay, Aaron?"
She was about his height. He stared at the intense black eyes and the hair worn in a ponytail. "Ashley?" he asked.
She smiled as she picked up his books and handed them to him. "Come on, we"re going to be late for class. You"re going to sit by me, right?"
He followed her down the long hallway, past clumps of students in multicolored jerseys, across the carpeted main foyer, and up a narrow flight of whitewashed stairs. They stepped thru a door crowded with multicolored cardboard cutouts, and disappeared together into a radiant, sunlit classroom vibrating with warmth and lively chatter.
