Chapter 2
Chapter Two

Evan woke with a start. He bolted upright in bed, breathing heavily, his mind scrambling to put together the events of the previous evening. Initially he tried to convince himself that it had somehow been an unusually vivid dream - but in looking down at himself that illusion quickly unraveled. No scenario he could think of would explain why he was in a pair of blue footy pajamas, covered in stars and planets just like the bedspread he had been tucked under. Evan looked down at the top of the blanket where his hands were hidden underneath. He licked his lips, took a deep breath, and threw the blanket back...to reveal the soft weak appendages of a little boy. The hot sting of tears burned in the back of his eyes and he almost certainly would have broken down crying right then were it not for a clatter in the other room.

His eyes widened. Julia.

With newfound determination Evan looked for some sort of escape route only to find that the room was windowless. What he did find was a half-open door that led to an adjoining bathroom. Not sparing a moment he leapt out of bed and dashed through the door, ignoring for the moment how awkward sensation of running in fleece footy pajamas. Once inside the room, though, he found that it too was windowless. He took a moment to calm down and gather his thoughts, fighting desperately against the fear and despair that threatened to swallow him whole. Okay, he thought. It sounded like she was in the kitchen. That should give me a clear path to the front door.

He exhaled and clenched his fists.

Go, he commanded himself. Now!

He spun back towards the door but before he could so much as step forward he was stopped dead in his tracks by the sight of Julia standing in the doorway, a smile on her face and her hands on her hips. Evan cried out in surprise and lost his balance, scurrying back on his hands as he fell onto his bottom.

“Good morning, honey.” Julia said, sweetly. “Did you sleep well?”

“Get away from me.” Evan shouted. “Don’t come any closer, you crazy bitch!”

Julia frowned. “How can you talk to your girlfriend like that? I know we’ve only been seeing each other for a day but I would think you’d have a little more respect for me.”

“What are you talking about? I’m a little kid for Christ’s sake!”

“Oh, that.” Julia lowered herself into a kneeling position. Evan scrambled away from her only to hit the back of his head on the tub. Julia laughed softly and scootched a little closer.

“I thought it might be kinda fun - for the both of us - if we spent the weekend pretending to be mother and child. What do you think?”

Evan laughed in disbelief. “Are you fucking crazy? I’m not spending another minute trapped in the house of some witch!”

“Witch is such an ugly word. Let’s just say I’m ?magically inclined’.”

“I don’t give a fuck what you are. I’m getting out of here right now.” Evan declared. “Move out of the way!”

Julia sighed as her expression turned somber.

“You know how much I love kids, right?” Evan just eyed her warily. “Well...I’ve never been able to have one of my own. With this daycare I figured I could be with the little ones all the time, but it’s just not the same as caring for your own child.”

She looked away.

“All I wanted to do was spend one weekend being a mother - to have someone that I could take care of and who I know would love me unconditionally.”

She raised her eyes to meet Evan’s. A sly smile played on her lips.

“And, of course, once we were done pretending...well, there would be no end to my gratitude.”

Evan’s heart skipped a beat. To his own surprise he felt a small twinge of sympathy at Julia’s plight but even that was quickly washed away by his desire to be with the beautiful woman kneeled in front of him. Oddly enough, while one half of his mind had become inundated with rekindled lust, the other half couldn’t help but consider the possibilities of the scenario Julia had laid out. The thoughts that flooded his mind in the restaurant absorbed him once more. After a couple moments’ consideration Evan reached the conclusion that he could, at the very least, stand to be like this for a little while - so long as he had Julia’s promise to keep him going.

This is crazy, the logical part of his brain screamed. This is absolutely fucking nuts.

“...just for this weekend?” He said, softly.

Julia’s face brightened.

“Just this weekend.” She reassured him. “But who knows, by Sunday night maybe you’ll want to keep going a little longer.”

Evan managed a little smile.

“I seriously doubt that.” He sighed and pulled himself to his feet. “Okay. Let’s do it.”

Julia let out a little cry of joy and lunged forward, pulling Evan into a tight hug. Caught off guard, Evan could do nothing but stand with his arms at his sides, his face growing warm enough to fry eggs on his cheeks.

“Thank you so much, Evan. You won’t regret this.” She reached for the zipper on his pajamas. “Now, let’s get you cleaned up. We’ve got a big day ahead of us.”

“Uh...” Evan gently pushed her hands away. “I’ll just take a shower, thanks.”

Julia looked at him and smiled.

“I’m sorry, I got a little carried away. You’re capable of making your own decisions - you’re still a man, after all. Even if that man looks like the cutest little boy I’ve ever seen.”

She tweaked his nose. Evan blushed and managed a smile - but when she rose to his feet he couldn’t help but feel a pang of anxiety at seeing how she towered over him.

“Clothes are in the top drawer.” She instructed. “Don’t take too long in there!”

With that, she left the room and closed the door behind him, and it was only then that he became aware of the full-length mirror hung on the back of the door. The reflection swung around and gave Evan the full picture of what had happened to him, the suddenness of the realization sending a cold shiver down his spine. In the glass stood a boy of seven or eight with a head full of black curls and an adorable face beset with wide dark eyes that shimmered like wet stones. As unsettling as it was to see himself like this, he knew that what lay underneath could only be worse. Well, he thought with a sigh, no sense in putting it off. With calculated movements he pulled down the zipper on his pajamas and couldn’t help but wince when the garment parted and revealed the colorful briefs that lay underneath - bright blue trim with smiling moons and stars all over. He groaned with humiliation. I’m sensing a theme here.

Evan kicked off the pajamas and lost the briefs. He returned his attention to the mirror and couldn’t help but wince at what he saw. His arms had been rendered wiry and powerless and a cursory flex failed to expose even the slightest bit of muscle. Tiny toes wiggled at the end of Lilliputian feet. His olive skin had turned baby smooth and plumped with traces of baby fat in the tummy and thighs. And beneath that tummy and between those thighs lay what remained of his manhood - a stubby little nub that could hardly even be called a penis. He understood now the need for the juvenile term “pee-pee” - for what he now possessed fit the word to a T. With a deep frown he held it in his palm, sighed, and wondered how he was ever okay with being this small.

Two days, he thought to himself. Just two days.

---

Evan cautiously stepped out of the bedroom dressed in the least embarrassing clothing he could find - a pair of jeans and a mock athletic t-shirt. As soon as he was in the hallway the smell of pancakes hit his nostrils. His stomach rumbled and any trepidation that might have remained faded away. He entered the dining room just as Julia was setting down a heaping platter of pancakes. She saw him and smiled.

“Help yourself.” She offered. “I’ll get you some milk.”

“Could I have coffee?” Evan asked as he climbed into a chair.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t have any. Don’t drink the stuff.”

With that she disappeared into the kitchen. Evan eyed her as she left but hunger quickly overwhelmed any suspicion he might have had. With surprising enthusiasm he pulled two pancakes onto his plate, slathered them in butter and syrup, and dug in. When Julia returned her presence barely registered with him - but what he definitely took notice of was the tall glass of milk she set down. By the time he finished eating he had drained it dry, downing the last drops before pushing back from the table and letting out a satisfied sigh. It was only then that he realized Julia had been watching him eat with a distinct look of amusement on her face. Evan straightened up and offered her an embarrassed smile.

“Um, that was really good.” He said. “Thanks.”

“You’re very welcome, sweetie.” She stood, took his plate and glass and kissed him on the forehead. Evan frowned and gently grabbed her wrist.

“Hey.” He said, blushing hotly. “Could I get a kiss on the lips?”

Even before he finished speaking Evan regretted saying it. The pitch of his voice and the tone in which he spoke made him sound like a little boy with a crush on the older girl next door - which, he realized, wasn’t too far off. It didn’t help matters that Julia’s response was to giggle and shake her head.

“Don’t be silly.” She said. “Mothers don’t kiss their little boys on the lips.”

Evan’s eyes narrowed. “You’re not my mother.”

“Of course not, sweetie,” She said as she swept into the kitchen, “We’re just pretending, remember?”

Evan opened his mouth to speak but Julia had already moved on.

“Go and get your shoes on, honey.” She instructed. “We’ll be heading out soon.”

Evan considered pressing the point but thought better of it. There’ll be time for that once we’re finished with all this nonsense.

“Where are we going?” He asked.

“Why, you’re taking me out on a date.”

“Oh yeah?” He said, amused despite himself. “Where am I taking you?”

She poked her head back into the dining room and smiled.

“You’ll see.”

---

Evan stared at the ground and glowered as he and Julia stood in line, hand-in-hand like so many of the mother and child pairs that surrounded them. He couldn’t say he understood their excitement - what was the big deal about the zoo, anyway? Animals. Wow. I can hardly contain myself.

“You know...” He said, looking up at Julia. “This isn’t exactly where I would choose to go on a date.”

Julia smiled and met his eyes.

“A date? Do you have a little girlfriend at school, sweetie?”

Evan frowned for a moment before rolling his eyes in realization.

“I get it.” He said. “That’s cute. I guess I’m supposed to act like a kid when we’re out in public, huh?”

Julia grinned and tapped her nose twice. Evan sighed but kept his mouth shut. It’s not like I can do much about it now, he thought. What am I going to do, drive myself home?

Once they were inside Julia paused at the map and studied it carefully.

“Hm, which way should we go first?” She mused. “Ooh, it says here that the tigers are out today! Do you wanna go see the tigers, sweetie?”

“Yeah...mommy.” Evan said with as much enthusiasm as he could muster. Julia smiled and gave his arm a little wiggle.

“This is going to be a lot of fun.” She said. “You’ll see.”

True to her word, Evan actually found himself having a good time. It had been a long time since he’d been to the zoo and the grandeur of certain animals was even further magnified by his current stature. And as much as he tried to insulate himself from it he couldn’t help but get caught up in the enthusiasm of the children that surrounded him. More than once he found himself grabbing Julia by the hand and pulling her in an effort to get her to speed up - and when the time came for lunch Julia had to convince him that it was time to take a break. Bubbling with energy Evan found it difficult to keep still in the line of the fast-food outparcel Julia had decided to stop at. Julia gave his arm a little tug and motioned at the menu.

“Okay, what would you like Evan?”

“Um...fiery chicken sandwich.” He said. “And a strawberry milkshake.”

Julia frowned. “I think that’s a little too spicy for you, honey, and I don’t want you having a milkshake with lunch. I’ll get you a kid’s meal.”

“But that’s what I want.”

“I know, sweetie, I heard you.”

Frustration welled up within him and Evan found himself in the peculiar position of having to tamp down a temper tantrum. Though it certainly would have been within character he still felt that he had at least a little dignity left and didn’t want to lose it pounding his fists on the floor of a fast food restaurant. Luckily that was the last time Julia put him into an awkward situation, and on the way home, Evan realized that it actually had been a pretty fun day - though as he tried to recall his favorite animals he felt his head nod and his eyelids grow heavy.

“Aww.” Julia chuckled as she glanced over from the driver’s side. “Are you sleepy, sweetie? Maybe you should take a little nap when we get home.”

“It’s okay.” Evan murmured, even as he struggled to stay awake. “I’m not getting tired.”

“Of course not, honey. But if you do, it’s okay to close your eyes for a little bit. That’s not really a nap, after all.”

His exhaustion-wracked brain couldn’t find any fault with that logic. Yawning deeply, Evan snuggled best he could into the seat, closed his eyes, and drifted off to dream dreams of exotic beasts and faraway lands.

---

Evan blinked, yawned, and sat up. After a few drowsy moments he was able to sweep the haze of sleep from his mind and gather that he was sitting on the couch in Julia’s living room. Judging by the golden slanted light that poured in through the windows Evan realized that it had gotten pretty late. I must have nodded off, he thought. He caught a whiff of something cooking but Julia entered the room before he could go and investigate.

“Hi there, sleepyhead.” She smiled. “Have a good nap?”

Evan yawned and nodded. “I feel terrific. What’s cooking?”

“Beef stew.”

“Smells good.”

“Go ahead and take a seat - you’re plate’s already on the table.”

When he entered the dining room he saw that Julia had already set a place for him that featured a heaping plate of beef stew and a chilled glass of apple juice. Evan stood next to his chair and examined the meal for a moment.

“Looks great.” He called into the kitchen. “Any chance I could I get a glass of soda instead?”

“I’m sorry, sweetie.” Julia called back. “But I don’t drink soda either. I’m trying to avoid caffeine.”

“They make caffeine-free soda...” Evan muttered under his breath as he climbed into his chair. Though he wanted to press the point, as was the case that morning he just couldn’t resist diving head first into the meal laid out before him. When Julia returned to the table and sat in the seat adjacent his she asked him what his favorite parts of the day were while nibbling at her own meal. Though he was simply humoring her at first, without realizing it Evan grew more and more excited about recounting the details of the day, barely even noticing when Julia gently chided him for talking with his mouth full. Before he knew it he had finished his meal. Without meaning to he cut loose with a reverberating burp, blushing and giggling when Julia shot him a look of mock irritation.

“It seems like you’re enjoying yourself.” She said as she pushed her plate aside.

“Surprisingly, yeah.” He shrugged and smiled. “I guess you make a pretty good mother after all.”

“I’m very happy to hear you say that.” She left her seat and kneeled next to Evan, smiling as she put a hand on his thigh and stroked his dark curls. “Because I was going to ask if you could do me one teensy little favor.”

“Sure.” Evan murmured, nearly drunk from the sensations of her gentle touch. “Anything you want.”

“I was wondering...if maybe you wouldn’t mind getting a little bit younger.”

Instantly Evan snapped to attention and pulled away from Julia’s touch.

“Absolutely not.” Evan declared. “Look, I may have enjoyed myself today, but that doesn’t mean I want to be even smaller. I’m barely at grade school level as it is.”

Julia frowned and slouched her shoulders.

“That’s really too bad.”

“I’m sorry, but I’m just not comfortable going any further. I hope that’s alright.”

“No, I mean it’s too bad you feel that way...” She said, looking at him with sympathetic eyes. “I thought you’d be open to the idea. Otherwise I wouldn’t have snuck the drop into your juice.”

Evan’s eyes widened.

“You didn’t.”

Julia didn’t say anything. Evan climbed down from his chair and backed away from her.

You didn’t.

“I’m sorry, sweetie.” She advanced on him and Evan almost felt as though he were being stalked by the colossus. “But it’s just going to make a teensy bit younger. It’ll be fun, I promise.”

Already Evan was beginning to feel the pervading warmth that marked his first transformation. Sweat prickled his skin and his mouth grew dry.

“...how much younger?” He managed.

“Oh, just a little bit, just a little tiny bit.” Julia promised. “A few years, maybe.”

The warmth begin to radiate within him and Evan knew in that instant that things had gone too far. With his clothes already becoming baggy he turned and bolted for the door - but Julia, as though in anticipation of his panic, dashed in front of him and blocked the only exit. Tears began to well in his eyes as he backed away from the giantess that was growing more intimidating with each passing heartbeat.

“Please...” He whimpered. “I don’t wanna be...”

Before he could finish that thought his heel caught on his now-oversized jeans and sent him tumbling backwards. When the back of his head knocked against the carpet the sudden jolt of pain was enough to send him over the edge. The flood that he had tried so desperately to hold back finally broke free, overwhelming Evan as he bawled on the floor of the living room like that little boy he had become. Dimly he was aware of Julia leaning down next to him, stroking his hair, whispering soft words of comfort as he tumbled even deeper into childhood. Evan was only aware that he had stopped getting smaller when Julia scooped him up in her arms, plucking him out of his jeans and underwear and leaving him dressed only in the t-shirt that draped over his tiny body. Though he knew he should be making every effort to escape her grasp something about being cradled in the crook of Julia’s arm calmed him down almost instantly. Within seconds his crying had weakened to little hiccupping sobs and disappeared entirely by the time they reached his bedroom. Julia sat cross-legged in front of the bed and pulled Evan onto her lap. He squirmed for a moment but found that he couldn’t resist being close to her, snuggling his head into her bosom as she gently stroked his hair.

“I’m sorry things turned out like this.” She whispered. “But it’s just for one more day. You can manage, right?”

Evan let out a little hiccup and looked down. Julia gently lifted his chin and looked into his eyes.

“And when we’re all done pretending, I’m going to give you everything you desire.”

The boy exhaled and gave her a weak little smile. Julia beamed.

“That’s my big boy.” She gave him a kiss on the forehead and stood him up. “Now, let’s get you ready for bed. All that crying must have worn you out.”

Evan couldn’t deny that he was suddenly very exhausted, and, if nothing else, he wanted the opportunity to be alone with his thoughts for a moment.

“Let’s see, you can sleep in that nightshirt, but we need something for you to wear underneath.” Julia said as she rummaged through the dresser’s middle drawer. “Ah, here we go.”

She held up - almost proudly - a pair of training pants, turning it around to show Evan the smiling cartoon characters plastered on the bottom. Evan swallowed. In the back of his mind he knew that getting even younger would inevitably put him in the range where such a childish undergarment was appropriate, even necessary - it was just the realization that he was actually that small that struck him so deep. Such was his shock that Evan didn’t even put up a fight when Julia asked him to lift his feet so she could put it on. She pulled the imitation underwear up his stubby little legs and cinched it around his waist. A perfect fit, Evan mused sadly. As soon as they were secure Julia swept him up and put him in bed, tucking him in before Evan could utter so much as a word of dissent.

“Good night, sweetheart.” Julia said as she kissed his forehead. “Pleasant dreams.”

“Good night...” Evan murmured, already closing his eyes and snuggling into the pillow. Julia chuckled softly as she stood, turned off the light, and left the room. A few moments passed before Evan cracked one eye open, making sure she was gone before climbing out of bed and quietly heading into the bathroom. He turned on the light - having to stand on his tippy toes to reach it - and pushed the door closed so he could look at himself in the full-length mirror. His reflection swung in front of him and for an instant he almost felt as though he was looking at one of the kids from Julia’s daycare. With his round, rosy cheeks his face had basically become that of a toddler’s, and in examining himself it seemed as though every part of his body had been covered in a fresh layer of baby fat. When he lifted his shirt it revealed a plump little potbelly that spilled over the patterned waistband of his - he shuddered to even think of them as his - training pants. But as embarrassing as it was to see himself wearing them they did remind him of something that had struck him as odd.

He moved to the dresser and opened the drawer that Julia had pulled the training pants from. Within he found not only a pile of the undergarments but a variety of clothing suitable for preschoolers. Evan frowned. I can understand why she’d have clothes like these lying around, but why does the top dresser have stuff for older kids? None of the brats that show up here could possibly be above four years old. There was one drawer left, the bottom cubby underneath. Careful to remain quiet he slid the middle capsule closed, gripped his hands around the bottom drawer, and pulled it open. When he saw what lay inside he had to cover his mouth to keep from crying out in surprise. Diapers. Booties. Onesies. Nothing that would fit anyone who had hit their second birthday - and Evan had never seen Julia take in kids that young.

“This isn’t for them.” He muttered. “Not at all.”

His mind raced. Though his first instinct was to immediately bolt from the house and run to the police he quickly realized that even if he could get them to believe him there’s no telling when - or if - he would return to normal. As anxious as it made him the only escape Evan could think of would be to continue to play along - and hope that Julia kept her promise. The thought clawed at him, tore him up inside as he closed the drawer and climbed back into bed, closing his eyes in search of fitful, restless sleep.
