I knew it was going to happen sooner or later, but I was surprise it didn’t happened sooner. You see, my soon to be second son was starting to loose more then just his age. He was starting to get younger in the mind as well.
I don’t mean that his loosing his memories, more like the experience behind these memories. He told me one morning that it was becoming harder for him to navigate around his job. He said he remembered where everything is, but it was harder to recall things in long term. I even did my own test, since I knew his job just as good as he did, and I was just a little surprise, but not greatly. I was half expecting his mind to start regressing with his body. Guess I should be glad that it’s only some part of his memory that, were disappearing, not all of them. But you know what, I was a little disappointed when his wasn’t regressing in the mind. But that’s beside the point.
Since I had a feeling something like this happen, I decided to get prepared. For the pass five year, since this entire thing started, I have been secretly brushing off my old law school education, taking some night class to learn much about the new techniques as I could. I, of course did this behind my regressing husband back, thinking he might took it the wrong way. But I was surprised, to say the least, when I told him about my studies and how I applied for a job at a local law firm and he took it better then I thought. But then again, I think he also knew something like this was going to happen, and probably praying I did something before it was too late.
“Well, how do I look?” I asked calmly as I showed my growing, and shrinking boys the new outfit I’m going to be wearing my first day.
The boys had the same, dear in the headlight, look on them when they saw me, but James has really red face, like he just stepped out of the heater. You see I have chosen a navy blue power suit with a white blouse. The skirt of my new outfit reached to the top of my legs and the stockings I’m wearing really showed off my still slim legs.
“You look great, mom!” Johnny said and gave me the thumbs up.
I could only giggle at my son’s positive altitude. In the last two years, my son had grown into a really good kid. He also starting to come to grip with his father’s regression, and he shared my sense of humor. He never misses the choice to make fun of his father. I don’t know if all of this sets right with James, but it wasn’t something that could be helped.
“Y-Yeah. Y-You l-look out of sight,” James said stammering a little.
I could only giggle more at how lost my future son looked. Unlike most people my husband age, James is quite awkward for a 22 year old. And that’s not from just his regression either. He was like that when he was first that age. And I never really did find out why he was like that.
“Well, I don’t want be late on my first day,” I said kindly and then kissed my regressing husband good-bye.
I only smiled at how red his face gotten; it was redder then a tomato around. I would have done something extra to try and see what would happen, but I didn’t have time.
To say, my first day at work was boring was an understatement. I was just so used to the ever-changing pace of restaurant work, this new job just felt slow and boring. Plus, all of the stares I was getting weren’t helping either. I was never 42, and I was just starting at a law firms. So, I was getting jealous stares from the younger members, and challenging stares from the older stuff members. But, I wasn’t going to be scared that easily.
As the day wore on, I found myself concentrating less on my new job and thinking about James. I wonder how much younger he was going to be when I get home. I had to suppress a giggle fit when I imagined, coming home to find a 16 year old, in place of the twenty-two year I left this morning. But I know that wasn’t how the process worked.
When the day was coming close to an end, I was surprised to get a call from James, telling me to meet him at our favorite restaurant. After a short drive, I found myself at a fancy, French restaurant. It was here that he first asked for my hand in marriage. Needless to say, it was our place.
Once inside, I was lid to where my husband was. I could only giggle at his choose of clothes. He wore black dress pants, brown loafers, and a red, long sleeve dress shirt. It was the same attire he wore on that night.
“What’s this all about?” I asked light heartedly.
“Oh, just to celebrate your new job,” he replied in his smooth voice.
I giggled as I took my seat, across from him. For the next few minutes, we talked and joked about different things, waiting for our meals to come. But we merely joked about his fading memories.
Our meal came soon and we begin eating, but that’s when it happened. I instantly notice the shock expression, when it appeared. I watched as his face slim into a slightly younger appearance and his lost more muscle mass, making his shirt look slightly baggy.
Now that James had slipped into his early twenties, it was getting noticeable when he has one of his spurts. Still, he was look enough to get away with it for a few more spurts, but when he reach the teenage years, I was going to start calling him my cousin’s kid, from out of town.
I could only giggled as I watched him snapped out of his trace and gave himself the once over. I also notice that he looked younger then twenty-one, which mean he had a big shrink spurt this time around.
“Well, at least I’m not in diapers yet,” he said in nervous humor.
I only giggle more. Though it was bitter, James had come to accept this role, he has been thrown into. I only hope that this feeling wasn’t going to end soon.
