Chapter 6
A Bumpy Ride

Chapter Description: A hayride gives Dan more relief than he bargained for. His clothes are dry, his secret seems safe, but Hannah is checking anyway.

The hayride waited behind the cider barn, a green tractor hitched to a long wooden trailer. Straw had been scattered across benches beneath a striped canvas canopy. Families queued beside a split-rail fence while the engine idled in uneven, shuddering bursts.

Dan stopped when he saw the steps.

They were not high. He knew that. Sophie climbed them easily with one hand on the rail, Nate hovering behind her without ever needing to help.

Still, when Dan raised his knee, the padding beneath his overalls folded thickly against his stomach. It held his thighs farther apart than he expected and resisted the movement just enough to make him misjudge the second step.

His shoe slipped.

Nate caught him around the waist.

Before Dan could find the rail again, his friend lifted him the remaining distance and placed him securely on the trailer bed.

“There.”

Dan pulled away, face burning.

Nate had already turned to offer Hannah his hand.

Nobody else appeared to have noticed.

Hannah selected a place on the forward bench and guided Dan into the seat beside her. He sat carefully, feeling the hidden garment spread beneath his weight with a papery rustle. Its padded shape rose around him, holding warmth against skin that had not felt properly dry since the bathroom.

Hannah drew a folded wool blanket from beneath the bench.

“I’m not cold.”

“You will be when we start moving.”

She spread it over both their laps. The blanket concealed the green overalls from his waist down and sealed in the heat already collecting beneath them.

The trailer filled. Sophie and Nate sat opposite, knees touching. Nate put an arm across the back of her bench, and Sophie leaned naturally into his side.

The driver fastened the tailgate.

The tractor pulled forward.

The first jolt threw Dan sideways into Hannah.

Her arm came around him at once.

“Careful.”

“I’m fine.”

The wheels dropped onto the rough field track. The wooden bench began vibrating beneath him, sending a steady tremor upward through the padding. Every rut compressed it against his body. Every rise released it again.

Dan braced his feet.

The hidden garment transformed the ride into a confusing series of dull pressures. Its centre pressed upward whenever the trailer struck a bump, holding him inside a warm pocket from which there was no room to shift away.

Another jolt travelled through him.

His body responded before his thoughts did.

Dan went still.

The reaction was slight at first—an involuntary stirring brought on by Hannah’s body against his, the vibration beneath him and the frustrating heat trapped under the blanket. He recognized enough of it to feel a flash of relief. Here, at least, was something familiar. Arousal. Something that still belonged to him.

Then came the panic.

Dan’s gaze dropped sharply to his lap.

The blanket lay in heavy folds across him. He could not tell what showed beneath it. From inside the padding, his response felt unmistakable—an urgent hardening crowded against soft material that had been fitted close around his groin. Surely the shape of it must be visible. Surely Nate could look down at any moment and understand exactly why Dan had gone so still beside Hannah.

He pulled one edge of the blanket higher, then smoothed it across his lap with a trembling hand.

Nothing changed.

The wool did not tent. Even the overalls beneath it could not have shown much. Between his body and anyone else’s eyes sat the thick padded garment, the fleecy green cotton and Hannah’s blanket. Layer upon layer had buried the evidence.

Relief came first.

Then humiliation followed it.

The softness that had seemed shapeless in the bathroom now held his arousal at an awkward downward angle. There was nowhere for it to rise, nowhere for the pressure to go. The padding simply absorbed the change into its own bulk, rendering it invisible while making him feel every confined inch of it. Every bump pressed the warm layers more closely around him—not pleasurably so much as insistently—leaving him caught between the arousal response itself and the degrading fact that nobody could see it existed.

Dan shifted his hips, trying to make room without exposing what he was doing.

The padding moved with him.

Plastic crackled beneath the engine noise.

Hannah placed a hand on his thigh through the blanket.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Then stop wriggling.”

Her hand remained there.

Across from them, Sophie laughed at something Nate said. She caught the front of his coat, pulled him down and kissed him.

Nate kissed her back without hesitation.

The sight sharpened Dan’s frustration. That was what he wanted: an ordinary gesture understood exactly as intended. Not cleaning. Not guiding. Not hands moving him into the correct position.

He turned toward Hannah.

She was watching the pumpkin fields pass beyond the trailer.

Dan touched her waist beneath the edge of her coat. His body remained uncomfortably aware inside the padding, each vibration prolonging the reaction without allowing it to resolve.

“Hannah.”

She looked down at his hand, then at him.

He leaned closer.

The trailer struck another rut. Dan pitched against her chest.

Hannah caught him with both arms.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

Before he could lift his face to hers, she cupped his cheek and planted a broad, noisy kiss against it.

“Mwah.”

The smack of it was loud enough that a woman farther down the trailer smiled.

Dan froze.

Hannah rubbed the kissed spot with her thumb and tucked his head beneath her chin.

“There. Stay close.”

He tried to straighten.

Her arm tightened around him, interpreting the movement as instability.

“I was trying to kiss you.”

“You did.”

“No, I—”

She pulled the blanket higher and tucked its edge behind his back.

Cold air stopped reaching him entirely.

The enclosed heat intensified. The padding became humid around his body, softening slightly with warmth while remaining thick enough to deny him any natural position. His frustrated response stayed trapped in the crowded pocket around his groin, stirring faintly whenever the trailer bounced hard enough.

He knew now that it could not be seen.

That should have made this easier. Instead, it made Hannah’s embrace feel more unbearable. She could hold him this closely and remain completely unaware of what his body was doing. The same layers that spared him public exposure also stripped the response of its meaning. To everyone else, there was nothing adult in his lap at all—only the bulky garment Hannah had put there and the blanket she had tucked over him.

Hannah began rubbing his upper arm.

“You’re freezing.”

“I’m not.”

“You’ve got goosebumps.”

Dan did, but not from cold.

He looked across at Nate and Sophie. Nate’s hand rested over Sophie’s on the small rise beneath her coat. Their bodies fit together without either becoming subordinate to the other. Sophie leaned into him because she chose to; Nate held her without repositioning her.

Dan was being soothed.

The contrast produced a tight, aching anger that he could not direct anywhere. He still wanted Hannah. His body was making that fact embarrassingly clear inside the garment she had fastened around him. Yet every attempt to communicate desire became, in her hands, another sign that he needed reassurance.

He lifted his head again.

Hannah pressed a kiss into his hair.

“Settle.”

Dan’s cheek returned to her shoulder.

Her perfume, her warmth and the soft movement of her chest as she breathed kept his body confused. The padding kept his response contained so completely that it had nowhere to express itself except as pressure. The jolting bench repeatedly renewed it just as humiliation began to smother it.

He tried again, more urgently now, working his palm against the resistant bulk while the wagon supplied the force the thick layers swallowed. His breathing shortened. The pressure low in his body gathered until the difference between arousal, discomfort and the strange fullness in his stomach disappeared.

His hand shifted, searching for a better angle.

Hannah intercepted it.

“No.”

Her fingers closed around his wrist and brought his hand back to rest on top of the wool.

“Something’s uncomfortable.”

“I fixed everything in the bathroom.”

“It’s pressing.”

“Leave it alone.”

She collected his other hand and arranged them together, then laid her palm across both.

Dan stared at the arrangement.

His hands lay harmlessly atop the blanket. Hannah kept them there without apparent effort, unaware that anything meaningful had passed between them.

Dan’s frustration sharpened almost into panic. He had been close to something. He could still feel it gathering beneath the padding, sustained now by the wagon rather than his hand, while Hannah calmly prevented him from doing anything about it.

The tractor turned onto a narrower track. Branches brushed the canvas canopy. The engine’s rough shudder settled into a low, sustained vibration beneath the bench, and the space beneath the blanket grew close enough that Dan could feel his own heat reflected back at him.

Another vibration travelled upward.

Heat tightened low inside his body.

The sensation had begun with Hannah’s closeness. He was certain of that. Her perfume, the softness of her body, Nate and Sophie kissing opposite them—all of it had awakened something familiar.

Yet it no longer felt fully as he remembered.

The padded garment confused every signal. Pressure rose without urgency. Desire gathered without direction. His arousal remained physically present but visually erased, enclosed so thoroughly that even he was beginning to experience it less as desire than as another discomfort Hannah expected him to tolerate. The trailer’s motion repeatedly carried him toward some invisible threshold, then left him stranded just short of it.

Dan clenched his hands beneath Hannah’s.

The tractor descended a slope.

The trailer began bouncing in a slow, relentless rhythm.

Each impact drove the padding more firmly against him. The heat became almost unbearable. Dan’s breathing shortened. He could feel his body approaching some kind of release, though he could no longer have said what would be released or why.

He tried to sit upright.

Hannah drew him back against her.

“Settle down.”

“I can’t.”

“You’re okay.”

Her lips touched his hair.

Dan closed his eyes.

Another jolt.

Another.

Pressure swelled through him, tangled with frustration, humiliation and the remnants of adult desire. His body tightened involuntarily. He held his breath, caught between the urge to escape Hannah’s arms and the need to press closer.

Then warmth gave way, spread through the padding in a sudden, sustained rush.

Dan’s breath left him.

For several seconds, everything inside him seemed to loosen at once. The tension collapsed. His body shuddered faintly against Hannah, then went heavy in her arms.

The release felt intimate enough that his first understanding of it was sexual.

At that exact moment, the tractor braked.

The trailer lurched beneath them. Dan was thrown forward against Hannah’s restraining arm as the engine dropped abruptly from its steady drone to a rough idle. The rhythm vanished. So did the private, suspended world beneath the blanket.

Voices rose around him. Someone laughed near the tailgate. The driver called an apology about another tractor crossing the track.

Dan jerked upright.

He was breathing too quickly. His legs felt weak, his hands still pinned beneath Hannah’s palm. The last trace of bliss drained away beneath the awareness that he was sitting in a crowded wagon with his face against his girlfriend’s coat.

A wave of mortification followed immediately.

Had that really happened?

Here?

Against Hannah, beneath a shared blanket, with Nate and Sophie sitting directly opposite?

Dan kept his eyes lowered.

Hannah’s hand moved slowly along his upper arm.

“There,” she murmured. “Better.”

Her tone contained no recognition of what he believed had happened.

That was somehow worse.

Dan lay motionless against her, listening to the tractor and the blood beating in his ears. Beneath the blanket, warmth continued spreading outward through the hidden garment. It seemed too prolonged for the explanation his embarrassed mind had chosen, but he could not bear to examine the difference.

The padding grew heavier, almost thicker.

Its interior changed around him, swelling softly and drawing the warmth away from his skin. The sensation faded without leaving the slick evidence he expected.

When the tractor began moving again, Dan risked looking across the trailer.

Nate was pointing something out beyond the trailer. Sophie followed his gesture. Neither was looking at him.

Carefully, Dan glanced down at his lap.

The dark green overalls appeared untouched.

No stain.

No visible dampness.

Relief struck so powerfully that he almost laughed.

Whatever had happened, the blanket had hidden it. His clothes were dry. Nobody knew.

Yet the padding itself remained hidden too. It might be holding evidence the overalls could not show. The thought made Dan’s stomach turn. Hannah had already demonstrated that she considered anything beneath the green cotton her concern. If she checked him again, she might feel the change without understanding—or, worse, understand it perfectly.

Perhaps he had imagined the release itself. Perhaps the jolting ride and trapped heat had produced nothing more than an intense bodily spasm. His humiliation had exaggerated it into something else.

Dan sank more deeply against Hannah.

The thought allowed him to breathe again.

A faint acrid scent rose beneath the blanket.

His relief faltered.

He drew another cautious breath, but the wind shifted through the trailer and carried the smell away. All that remained was cold air, tractor exhaust and sweet cider from another passenger’s cup.

Dan told himself the scent belonged to the clothes sealed in Hannah’s bag.

The explanation was weak.

It was also enough.

Hannah stroked his hair.

“Tired?”

“No.”

“You can rest.”

Dan did not answer.

His body had gone strangely quiet. The frustrated adult longing that had tormented him moments earlier had disappeared into the padded warmth without ever reaching Hannah. She continued holding him as though his stillness proved that soothing had been all he needed.

Across from them, Sophie rested her head on Nate’s shoulder. Nate kissed her temple. Their intimacy remained clear, mutual and uncomplicated.

Dan’s had dissolved into something he could not name.

He closed his eyes.

By the time the tractor reached the far field, the warmth had begun to cool.

Hannah removed the blanket.

Cold air touched Dan’s lap. He immediately looked down again.

Still dry.

The overalls showed nothing.

Hannah stood and offered him both hands.

“Up.”

Dan allowed her to pull him from the bench.

The hidden garment released from the wood with a soft crackle and settled between his thighs with unfamiliar weight. Its swollen interior hung lower than before, contradicting the clean fabric he could see.

His knees trembled when he took his first step. He told himself it was the abrupt stop, the vibrating bench, the awkward padding. Not the fading aftershock of what he believed he had done beneath Hannah’s blanket.

Dan frowned and pressed his knees together.

The padding resisted.

Hannah was already guiding him toward the steps.

Nate descended first. Sophie followed on her own, waving away his offered hands.

Dan turned to climb down.

“Face the trailer,” Hannah said.

She rotated him by the hips and placed his hands on the rail. Then she guided one foot backward until it found the first step.

At the bottom, Nate caught him beneath the arms and lifted him to the ground.

The landing compressed the padding.

Dan felt its changed weight unmistakably.

He looked down again.

Dry.

Completely dry.

The contradiction left him dizzy.

Hannah descended behind him. Dan turned toward her, needing some adult recognition after what had happened beneath the blanket—even if she merely whispered that they would discuss it later.

He reached for her waist.

She redirected his hand before it arrived.

“Hold still.”

Hannah moved behind him.

Her palm settled against the padded seat of his overalls.

She pressed.

Dan’s whole body locked.

For one sickening instant, he was certain she had discovered him. The pressure of her hand seemed to reach through every layer, testing not merely the garment’s fullness but the secret he believed it concealed.

“Are you wet?”

The question struck him with two possible meanings, both unbearable.

“What?”

Hannah checked again, compressing the concealed garment through the smiling apple printed across his backside.

People passed them on both sides. The driver removed the steps. Nate and Sophie became intensely interested in the sign for the pumpkin patch.

Hannah straightened.

“Only a little.”

Dan twisted, trying to see himself.

“But my clothes are dry.”

“I know.”

“Then what are you checking?”

Hannah pulled his coat lower, concealing the fuller shape beneath it.

“You’re fine for now.”

She took his hand and led him toward the attractions.

Dan followed, carrying the impossible contradiction with him.

He had felt a release and believed it sexual.

His clothes remained dry.

Inside the padding, something warm and heavy moved with every step, silently holding the answer his mind still refused to assemble.
