“Goodbye!” Dan called out the front door as he closed it.

Dan felt butterflies in his tummy. He would’ve been lying if he said this hadn’t been a situation he had been specifically trying to avoid since the relationship started. He knew exactly what Livy needed, he knew how to make Landon happy, but he had no idea at all about Robyn. He’d never even been alone with her before. She was so different to Livy. Livy could be put down some place and told to play and she would do it, Robyn was like a firework that someone had let off in the house, liable to bounce around and demand attention.

Dan realised he was still standing at the door. He turned around just as he heard a metallic crash come from the kitchen. He took a deep breath and walked carefully forwards until he appeared in the doorway. Robyn was by the counter, bent over and showing off her diaper as she gathered up a bunch of mixing bowls she’d somehow knocked off the side.

“Sorry!” Robyn called out behind her, “I was trying to help…”

“It’s… OK.” Dan said as he walked inside, “Why don’t you sit down? I’ll sort out breakfast.”

“OK!” Robyn popped up with a little jump and a beaming smile.

Dan watched as the young woman practically leapt on to one of the chairs. She perched herself on her knees and leaned over the back as Dan finished picking up the things that had ended up on the floor. When he looked behind him, he could’ve sworn that, just for a fraction of a second, Robyn had been looking at his butt.

“If I’d had some more time to prepare, I’d have got the highchair out of the garage.” Dan said as he got some cereal and milk together.

“You don’t think I can be trusted in a normal chair?” Robyn asked. The exaggerated innocence seemed to be dripping off the words.

Dan looked around again and saw Robyn with the cheekiest smile he’d ever seen. Her feet were swinging back and forth under the chair, and he shook his head a little before pouring out the milk. This was all alien to him. If he was being honest, he was, in large part, just copying the things he’d seen Landon doing for the girls.

The point was that Livy rarely demanded anything from Dan. When she was Little, which was pretty much all the time, she was the archetypal good girl. She was quiet, played nicely and certainly never threw a tantrum. Dan was used to that, he knew how to deal with it. With Robyn it was almost like all his previous knowledge of how to look after an adult baby was useless. He was worried about doing the wrong thing, of not being able to handle the way she expressed herself.

“Hey? Dan?” Robyn’s voice seemed to break through the thoughts that had clouded Dan’s eyes, “I was just kidding.”

“Right.” Dan shook his head a little to try and clear the fog, “Sorry.”

Dan carried over two bowls of cereal. He placed one in front of Robyn and put another down for himself. He sat down and very quickly started eating. It was only when he didn’t hear Robyn that he looked up and saw her looking right back at him.

“What?” Dan asked.

Robyn looked pointedly down at the spoon and the back up to Dan. It took him a second to catch on. Scooting his chair to be closer to Robyn, he picked up the spoon and dipped it into the cereal. This was something Landon did occasionally, but it was far from a common occurrence. Dan wondered if Robyn was feeling especially small that day for some reason, or if there was a different reason that she seemed to want him to feed her. He raised the spoon but when it got near Robyn’s mouth the adult baby turned away.

“No!” Robyn said with a petulant whine.

“Robyn, I don’t…” Dan felt lost.

“Don’t want!” Robyn said. She briefly turned to look at Dan and despite the tone of her voice she was smiling.

Dan thought back to what Landon usually did. He could picture meals with Landon sitting next to Robyn, holding up a spoon and… Oh, now he remembered. Dan let out a sigh. If this was how things were going to go then the day would be a lot harder work than he had hoped.

“H-Here comes the airplane.” Dan said. His voice was rather flat, and he couldn’t help but feel a little silly.

As if a switch had been flicked, Robyn turned to face the spoon with a beaming expression and opened her mouth wide. Dan put the spoon inside and Robyn eagerly slurped it up. Dan smiled as he fed himself a few more mouthfuls before lifting the spoon up for Robyn again.

“Open up the hangar.” Dan said. He knew that he wasn’t doing nearly as good of a job as Landon did, thankfully it seemed to be enough for Robyn who ate the food without complaint.

The process repeated a couple more times. Dan was looking at Robyn’s bowl of cereal and seeing just how little she had eaten. It felt like they would be there all day. Dan was starting to wonder how long it would have to continue before Robyn let him off the hook.

“I can take it from here if you want.” Robyn said.

Dan wondered if the perceptive Little had worked out how he was feeling. He gave her a smile and handed over the spoon. Robyn didn’t look too disappointed, if she had been expecting him to feed her the whole meal then she was doing a good job to hide it. Dan returned to his own bowl and already wondered how long Landon and Livy would be out of the house. He felt guilty. It wasn’t like he didn’t want to get to know Robyn, more that he was simply unprepared. He should’ve asked Landon for advice before she left…

Dan was broken from his thoughts when he suddenly felt a splash of milk on his hand. He looked over to see that Robyn had somehow managed to spill half a spoonful of milk on to the table, some of it splashing on to Dan and more ending up on Robyn’s pyjamas.

Robyn was looking at Dan again. It was that appraising, searching look that she seemed to give him when she was expecting him to do something. He had no idea what she could’ve wanted and turned back to his own food. He hadn’t managed another spoonful before Robyn dropped her spoon. It landed on the table with a clatter and spilled more milk and some cereal on to the surface. In Robyn’s rush to pick it up, she knocked the bowl and caused a little more milk to spill.

“Careful.” Dan said as he looked over.

Dan had seen Robyn’s movements. They didn’t seem clumsy enough to have been accidental…

Robyn didn’t say anything in reply. Though she did manage to successfully eat a mouthful of cereal before sticking her tongue out at Dan and giggling. With her feet kicking in the air under the table and the milk now dribbling down her chin she looked more like a three-year-old than the adult Dan knew she was.

Anxiety washed over Dan. He felt like he was doing everything wrong. He was completely failing to look after the Little. Why couldn’t she just say exactly what she wanted? He knew it rather defeated the point of “Little Space”, but he was lost at sea and struggling to work out which way was land. He wondered if he could stand up and just leave the room, get some fresh air and maybe collect his bearings.

“Robyn, I… I just ne-… Careful!” Dan exclaimed as Robyn’s hand knocked into the bowl and this time it seemed like half the contents spilled out and over the wooden tabletop.

“Oops. Sorry.” Robyn said. How much she meant it was open for debate.

Dan looked at the spreading liquid with his mouth hanging open. Robyn had slipped off the side of her chair. Dan thought she was going to get the kitchen towels to clean up her mess, but instead she just skipped around to the other side of Dan.

“You have to be more careful.” Dan said as he rose out of his seat and went to the kitchen counter.

“Or what?” Robyn asked from behind him.

Dan froze. He turned around and frowned. Robyn was stood near the entrance to the kitchen. She had her hands clasped behind her back and one leg kicked out in front of the other, swaying slightly. She was still grinning, as if she was playing a game that Dan had no idea existed.

“E-Excuse me?” Dan asked.

“What are you going to do?” Robyn asked, her head tilted slightly to one side, “Spank me?”

Dan was left speechless. The four of them were in a relationship but it still somehow felt wrong to think about punishing Robyn, it would be like shouting at the child of a friend, it was just something you left to the parent. He didn’t know if Robyn was really asking to be punished, testing his limits, or genuinely asking if he was going to punish her. He didn’t move or say anything.

Robyn, clearly tired of waiting, turned on her heels and skipped out of the room humming a happy tune. Dan was left by the sink, the kitchen silent except for the occasional drip of milk. He couldn’t help feeling relieved that Robyn was out of the room, that he didn’t need to worry about her for a few minutes at least. All Dan could think about was how Livy would’ve never acted like that.
