Chapter 1
Resisting

Chapter Description: This story seems to have vanished from here for some reason, so I've reuploaded it.

"At first I thought it was just stress. Potty training is such a pain in the bum," Jane paused for a second and concentrated, "in the ass that I didn’t think it was weird that I wanted to give up. I convinced myself it was just a little break for a few days."

"Yeah, I first noticed it with my kids, too," Steve said. "Sarah never used to let Billy play with her, so I was thrilled when she actually asked him to herself. A couple weeks later, it was like she needed his approval. She practically begged him to play Mario with her. Still I thought it might have just been a phase until she wet the bed the first time. Or rather when I found myself congratulating her for it."

"My boyfriend for me," a teenage girl said. She was in an overdone goth outfit and makeup, but when she shifted, Jane could see that she had frilly pink socks on. "He started getting more into cartoons and toys. He’s a nerd, so it didn’t seem weird at first, but he never used to play with them. Then one day, I went to his house and just saw him in a diaper getting spoon fed baby food by his mom like it was no big deal. And the weird thing is that my first instinct was too squeal about how adorable it was."

"Yeah, it’ can happen pretty suddenly sometimes," a man Jane didn’t know said. "What did you do?"

"Well we still hung out that day. The cartoons were more immature than normal, and he couldn’t form complete sentences, but somehow it was just as fun as normal. I don’t think it was until I was changing his diaper for a second time and felt...felt jealousy that I realized what this could do to me. I tried to talk to his mommy- his mom about it, but she seemed to think everything was exactly what it should be. Then she told me how cute we’d look in matching diapers, and I just agreed automatically. She left the room and I came to my senses and ran out of there. That was three weeks ago. Now everyone at school is changing at least a little, and they seem to not notice or like it."

"Yeah," another teenager piped in. "And they just suck you in. You’ll be over watching cartoons, and then you buy a pacifier on the way home. I didn’t even think about it until I started opening the package. What the heck."

"If you think that’s bad," Jane said, "I actually bought diapers in my size the other day when I meant to get some for Timmy. I threw them in the garbage when I got home."

The dozen people at the group continued on with their stories about how they really started to know the world was changing. It had only been about a month since it started as far as anyone can tell, but it was like everyone was getting younger and younger mentally. And the world adjusted to fit them. At this point, it was hard to find a TV station that didn’t show kids shows or non-absorbent underpants for someone under 80 pounds. And bras were practically forgotten culturally.

Yet despite this, very few seemed to act like anything was odd. Even as people forgot how to do basic math or read above a 1st grade level, all services seemed to keep going. It was a mystery as to who was running the factories or power plants, and Jane was pretty sure there would soon be no one left smart enough to figure it out. Even those few who were now meeting felt the growing temptation to join in and just let it happen, and little by little, they were losing adult skills. Jane could barely do her accounting anymore, not that anyone at work seemed to mind.

After a couple hours, the meeting was over, and Jane bid her new friends farewell. It was a lot to take in, but she was glad she’d finally found a group of people still like her. It was still light out, so she decided to sit at the park for a little bit and relax before heading home.

Soon, a woman and her daughters came over to the nearby sandbox. One was a toddler in a pair of overalls, and the other looked to be about twelve. Though with her hair in pig tails and Sesame Street shirt, she it almost seemed like she was a really tall preschooler. She very well might have been these days. The two girls immediately started playing in the sand, the older one often looking to the other and following her lead. Jane looked over the mother as she walked around to the other side of her children. What Jane at first assumed was some jacket over a dress was really part of an adult sized parochial school uniform. For a brief moment, Jane thought about how good she’d look in one before she snapped herself out of it. No. She was an adult, and she’d look like an adult.

After watching their rudimentary play, the mother filled up a bucket with water from the nearby bubbler and showed them how to make a sandcastle. The toddler awkwardly attempted to imitate, and the older girl attempted to imitate her awkwardness. She and her mother smiled at how she successfully made something as primitive as her sister. After a few minutes, the older one stopped, blushed, then looked ecstatically happy.

"Mommy I wet my pants!" She stood up and sure enough, there was a dark stain on her shorts.

"Wow, good job, honey! You’ll be back in diapers in no time!"

"Does that mean I’m ready for-"

Anticipating the question, the woman pulled a pair of Pullups out of her diaper bag. "Congratulations. My young adult has become a little kid."

The girl squealed, pulled off her shorts right there, and slid the padded garment on her legs. She looked at herself, jumped up and down a bit excitedly, and started running around saying "I’m a little kid now." After a moment, she ran up to Jane. "Hey lady! Look how little I am!"

"Wow," she said trying to suppress the enthusiasm she was feeling while still faking it for the girl. "How little are you?" She didn’t want to know, but it would be impolite not to ask.

"I forgot how to multiply and tie my shoes and reading is really hard now. And my dad put training wheels back on my bike. Oh, and now I pee my pants!" she said proudly giving her underwear a tug.

"Wow, that is little," she said. She pictured her son at the girls age bringing someone like her home after a date. Her gushing about being so cool for being in diapers, and him reassuring her that she will be soon, too. Jane would put on some Sesame Street for them to watch, and...wait, she shouldn’t be thinking about-

"How little are you?" the girl asked.

"Oh, I can’t tie my shoes, either," she said instantly. Wait, why did she say that?

"Cool!" the girl gave her a high five and went back to playing.

Jane reached down to her shoes and untied one. With a weird mixture of dread and excitement, she tried twisting them together. Then she looped them around each other a few different ways. An overwhelming wave of pride hit her. She couldn’t tie her shoes. Soon she wouldn’t be able to ride a bike or read or use the potty! An image appeared in her mind of her sucking her thumb, sitting in a wet diaper-NO! She stood up suddenly. "Ibaba" she puller her thumb out of her mouth. "I’m an adult," she told herself. "I won’t lose it all. I’ll" she had to fight a wave of embarrassment and disgust, "I’ll learn to tie my shoes again." The other people there just stared at her, and Jane started running off. Being at a playground was a bad idea. She nearly tripped over her loose shoe and just kicked it off. She’d buy new laced shoes when she learned again.

Soon she was back at home. She stopped to catch her breath.

"Hi Ms. David," the babysitter said. Jane was pretty sure her name was Sally. "How was the movie?"

"Huh? Oh, right. That was good. How was Timmy?"

"He was great. We played Candy Land and drew pictures and had ice cream. We should have another playdate real soon!"

Jane had a bad feeling. "You mean I’ll have to have you babysit again, right?"

Sally looked confused. "But we didn’t play babysitter."

Jane just sighed. "Can you make it home by yourself?"

"Uh huh. If you hold my hand while I cross the street."

Jane did so and hurried back in. She went back to the living room and found Timmy still awake and watching TV. She was briefly mad about that, but how could she expect a little girl like Sally to make her friend go to bed? She meant a big girl like Sally. Teenager. Babysitter. Those felt wrong, but she repeated them in her head, anyway.

"Hi, sweetie," she said. Timmy turned and ran over to his mother. She embraced him and picked him up. "Looks like someone needs a new diaper." She didn’t mind being pleased about that. It was only because doing this made her feel more like a mother and therefore more adult. It had nothing to do with being proud of how immature Timmy was.

As she laid him on the changing table, he reached over and grabbed a pacifier he found next to him. Jane watched as he sucked it. She had just weaned him of that when this whole thing started happening. He must have picked it up immediately after, but it was weeks before Jane really noticed. She wondered for a moment what the appeal was. Did it feel good on his tongue? Was it really that relaxing? It was certainly cute. And dentists did say that it was much better than a thumb. She might have to think about switching. Or at least cutting her nails shorter so it was more comfortable.

She pulled her son’s pants off with her free hand, wiped him, and with some disappointment, pulled her thumb out of her mouth to tape him up. Timmy must have seen the look on her face, because he took the pacifier out and held it up. She bent over, took it in her mouth, and started sucking. This really was quite nice. She wondered why she’d make a baby give it up when even a big girl like her-

She spit it out. Focus. She was far too big for that. Even Timmy was too big for that. She must have looked adorable. Ridiculous. She must have looked ridiculous. Not adorable.

She was interrupted again by her son’s giggling. "That’s funny, huh?" He kept laughing, and she blew a raspberry on his stomach. She should just focus on motherhood. Mothers were grown ups. "Let’s get you to bed."

"No!"

"Little kids like you need to go to bed."

"But you still up!"

That was a good point. It was totally unfair to make one little kid go to bed while another stayed up. Person. One person go to bed while another stayed up. "Okay, but if you get too sleepy, I’m putting you right to bed."

"Yay!"

He sat on the floor as she sat on the couch.

"Pway Mommy!"

She wasn’t sure if she should play in her state. Still, she was doing it as a mom, so it was probably fine. She got on the floor. Timmy babbled something about certain toys being bad guys and others being good. Jane tried her best to follow along. She decided it might be easier if she gave some identities herself. She picked up a stuffed unicorn that one of Timmy’s friends had left a few days ago.

"This is Pretty Princess Filly. She’s a good guy and she’s a princess of a whole planet and she can shoot lasers." There. She took charge. Just like an adult.

Timmy accepted this, and Jane had a much easier time following as their toys went from space to school to the ocean. Soon the cartoon he was watching had ended. She thought about the TV. It probably wasn’t good for her to stick to his cartoons, so she turned on Netflix.

"Let’s watch this, OK?" The upbeat theme song reassured her that this wasn’t something a baby boy like him would watch.

"Don’ wanna watch pony," he said with a huff.

"Sorry, Timmy, but we can watch one of your shows next." Little brothers could be such a pain sometimes.

Luckily, he didn’t throw a tantrum right there, and it didn’t take long before both of them were engrossed. "I don’t know why I didn’t watch this..." Jane trailed off as she felt an odd sensation between her legs. It felt warm and oddly wet. "I PEED MY PANTS!" she shouted in shock.

Timmy giggled and clapped. Jane couldn’t help beaming in pride. At long last, she was one of the little kids! She’d get to finger paint and not go to work and play on the jungle gym and-no. No. She had to fight it. She just needed to get something for an occasional accident. That was no big deal. And look into preschools. That was no big deal, either. She’d progress again. They’d, ech, potty train her.

But what was she going to do right now? She didn’t want anyone else to see her. Their praise might make her forget how to count or how to read or something cool like that. But how could she go to the store like this? Wait, what about those diapers from earlier? That was a terrible idea. But was it really worse than going out like this? After all, she could still take a diaper off and go in the potty. That would be pretty growed up. Then she’d just get proper Pullups tomorrow.

"Wait here a sec, Timmy." She went outside and opened the garbage can. The package was right on top. With a gulp, she pulled it out and took it to Timmy’s room. She could do this. It was no big deal. They were just underpants. Really cool underpants. She slipped off her wet garments and tossed them in the diaper genie without a second glance. She then wiped herself. This felt so much better than toilet paper. She might just have to keep using this when everything else returned to normal.

Now it was the moment of truth. She opened up one of the diapers and placed it on the table. Then she sat on it. This wasn’t so bad. It was pretty comfy. Taping it back up was pretty easy, too. She looked in the mirror. Cute, but something was wrong. Then she spotted it. She reached down and plopped it back in her mouth. When she got up, a 5 and a half foot tall toddler sucking on a pacifier. She smiled. Those new diapers didn’t change her at all.

"Janey! Let’s pway!" her twin brother’s voice called out, and she happily rejoined him.
