The Gift of Giving

A year or so had passed since Vern had woken up that fall morning out of a dream which seemed all too real. When he had woken up next to Anna and Jill that morning he could remember the dream vividly. No. It wasn’t a dream. It was a memory he had told himself. He remembered that night in the bar. He remembered Becky’s smell and taste. He remembered to the finest detail the look of shock and hatred on Carrie’s face when she had burst through the door. And Vern shuddered in his diaper. He understood why Carrie was so mad. He knew he deserved to be punished. But not a punishment like this, he thought looking down at his small body encased in a pink onesie, his little legs sticking out of his diaper. He couldn’t decide whether or not he wanted to stay in his current position or return to the way things were.

Vern was now in second grade. Mrs. Rose, his first grade teacher, had kept him somewhat protected from harm and abuse that year. He felt safe by the time March rolled around, and It was smooth sailing from there until the end of the school year. After all, he already knew everything which was taught.

But now he was in second grade.

Mrs. Rose wasn’t his teacher anymore. His teacher seemed older, less friendly, more stern. Ms. Huber gave Vern a raised eyebrow every time she saw him. In pink and in fluffy diapers which he did not even try to conceal.

Jill was in a different class, but Anna managed to remain with Vern this year. And Tom ended up in Vern’s class as well. Oh, great, Vern thought. Just what I need: another 9 months of him trying to embarrass me.

The Diaper Dolls one had one more recruitment since last year. Chelsea Polowski. She was a thin girl with dark blond hair and bright green eyes. To commence the summer of last year, the three girls were taken to the beach where they not only turned a lot of heads with their diapered behinds and babyish swimsuits, but spotted a young girl sitting next to her mother on a beach blanket shaded by a large beach umbrella. The three girls heard the fourth arguing with her mother about going to play in the sand.

“Listen, we came all the way to the beach, I will not let you just sit here and do nothing.”

“But I feel so stupid!”

“Why on earth would you feel stupid?”

“I’m wearing I diaper! I’m not a baby!”

The woman sighed. “We’ve been over this. You’ve started having accidents in your panties. Until you’ve learned to be completely potty trained again You’ll be in diapers. I can’t afford to keep cleaning your clothes.”

“But mom! I ?m not gonna have a accident here! I promise!”

Vern, Jill, and Anna had at this time walked over to the beach blanket and poked the woman’s arm to get her attention.

“Excuse us Miss,” Vern had said, “Would your daughter like to play with us?”

The woman took one look at the girls, saw their diapers, and turned to her own daughter. “See, I told you there’s nothing to be ashamed of. These girls would like you to play with them.”

The girl looked over her mother’s lap at the three girls in their diapers, looked back at her mother, and said after a long sigh, “...OK...”

So three turned into 4. They introduced themselves and got to know Chelsea. As it turns out, Chelsea also attended Vern’s school, but hadn’t begun any accidents until the last week or so. She had began to pee herself uncontrollably at random times, so her mother put her back into diapers. Vern, Jill, and Anna told her about the Diaper Dolls, which Chelsea was hesitant to join at first, but eventually said, “It kinda sounds like fun,” with a giggle. She had explained to them that she saw Vern and Jill stand up to Tom in the cafeteria, but didn’t know what was really going on at the time.

The four girls continued to hang out and play as babies together through to course of the summer. The “phase” which Jill and Anna’s parents figured the girls would grow out of, hadn’t been grown out of. But Jill and Anna managed to convince their mothers to play along. Now, Jill had bought various sets of baby clothes and got her mother to take her old rocking horse out of the attic, which was soon dusted off and being ridden by Jill constantly. Anna’s mother bought her baby clothes as well and even sold Anna’s bed in exchange for a cheap crib. Though, the three enjoyed being in Vern’s crib most of all. They couldn’t figure out how it made them feel small and babyish, but the next day Vern got Carrie to tell admit to magically enhancing it.

“Why would you do that?” Vern had said as he cocked one eyebrow.

“Why?” Carrie said as she finished taping his fresh diaper shut, “Would you prefer me to make it just a normal crib? You want to try growing up like a normal little girl?”

“NO!” Vern shouted before he could stop himself. “No... I just didn’t know why you would do such a nice thing...”

Carrie picked up the now freshly diapered Vern by the armpits making his little girl’s legs kick and jerk. “Well sometimes my little baby girl should get a present for being a good little baby.” And she grinned an evil grin as she rubbed her nose against Vern’s repeatedly, making him try to squirm away from her.

Then summer was over, and the next school year began. Second grade wasn’t that different from first grade and it certainly wasn’t any more difficult for Vern. Jill and Anna still couldn’t figure out how their friend seemed to know all of the answers before the questions were presented.

Besides new classmates having to deal with Vern and Anna dressed as babies most days and Tom’s continuous attempts to embarrass the girls, the school year proceeded smoothly. When Autumn hit, and the leaves turned to their bright shades of red and yellow and orange, and they had to bundle up before going outside, Vern, Jill, Anna, and occasionally Chelsea would spend days together, talking to each other about diapers, baby clothes, Barbie dolls and teddy bears (which Vern was gradually learning about), and writing letters to Santa (which Vern didn?t take too seriously).

“I’m gonna ask for a big playpen.” said Anna on one occasion. “what do you want for Christmas, Chelsea?”

“Um... I dunno.” she replied, looking at her own blank letter to Santa. “That make-up purse I saw on TV, I guess.”

“But that’s boring. Don’t you have make-up already?”

“Yeah... well... I dunno what to ask for. I’ve never asked for baby stuff before.”

Jill looked up from her paper. “How about a bonnet? You don’t have one of those.”

“Cause Santa won’t get it for me.”

“What? Why?” asked Anna.

“Mommy says Santa only gives good toys and things to good girls.”

“But you are a good girl.” Jill said in encouragement.

Chelsea sniffed. “No. Mommy says that I’m a bad girl cause I need diapers. Mommy says we all have to grow up. And Mommy says that being a baby is wrong.”

“What? That’s not true! Being a baby isn’t wrong!”

“That’s not what my mommy says. I asked my mommy if I could get a baby onesie and she got mad at me and asked if I really wanted to be a baby. She told me that the kids at school would make fun of me and tease me and call me names and they do.” Chelsea’s eyes were hot with tears now. “And mommy said that I was a naughty girl for wanting to be a baby. And mommy keeps trying to potty train me only I can?t no matter how hard I try.” She sat on her behind and rubbed her eyes with her knuckles as she cried. Vern couldn’t help but noticing how truly babyish she looked with her pigtails, light freckles, high-toned baby cries, and her tiny legs sticking out of the diapers and the onesie Vern had lent her for the day. The three girls gathered around her on the floor and hugged her.

“Mommy wants me to grow up so she doesn’t have to be around me anymore.” Chelsea said at last.

“What do you mean?” asked Vern.

“When school started, mommy stopped paying attentions to me. When I was a baby she would always be there. She would always be taking care of me. When I’m at school all day mommy gets happy. And when I come home she’s always mad at me. She hates me.”

“Shhh... shhh. Your mommy doesn’t hate you.” said Jill.

“Yeah. Your mommy loves you.” added Anna.

“No she doesn’t,” said Chelsea through a sniffle, “She hates me. When dad takes me home from school I come inside, mommy looks at me angry. And she gets her medicine from the refrigerator and drinks it all and says, ?Just what I need: more work’ only mom doesn’t do work. And daddy fights with her and tells her she doesn’t do work.”

And a knot formed inside Vern’s stomach. It was as if a tight hand had gripped itself around his chest and pulled. Now he knew why Chelsea’s mother seemed so angry at the beach and why she was so keen to get rid of her. When the three girls asked if Chelsea could play, Chelsea’s mother thought it was a good way to get her daughter out of her hair. Chelsea’s father probably forced her mother to take her to the beach. Vern could imagine Chelsea’s parents fighting over taking Chelsea to the beach, and Chelsea’s mother giving in reluctantly.

And Vern’s mind started to race.

“Carrie?”

“For the last time, Vern. You are to call me--”

“I’m sorry, mommy.”

“That’s better Veronica.”

Vern winced. “Listen, I need a favor from you.”

“Aw does my little girl need her diaper changed already? My goodness sweetie it’s only been an hour since you wet your last one.” and Carrie made a move towards Vern to pick him up.

“No I don?t. Just listen for a second. This is about Chelsea.”

“Oh, really? What’s wrong?”

“She... yesterday she told us about her mother. From what she says, her mother abuses her. She yells at Chelsea for wanting to be a baby and not being able to potty train. And I also think she’s an alcoholic.” Carrie picked up Vern and sat him next to her on Carrie’s bed. “Chelsea told us,” Vern continued on, “that her mother gets her ?medicine’ from the refrigerator and drinks it all whenever Chelsea comes home...”

Carrie’s eyebrow twitched. “...And?” she said.

“... aaaand... I feel bad. She’s my friend and I don’t want her to be upset.”

“You’re falling into a girl’s mentality rather quickly, Veronica. Are you saying you actually care about this girl? You really consider her your friend?”

“Don’t push it. I just feel bad that her mother abuses her.”

Carrie smiled. “So what do you want me to do?”

Vern looked as though he just woke up with a wet diaper. “Um... help her of course. You are a witch aren’t you? Duh!”

“Still, how do you expect me to help?”

“I dunno. I think turning Chelsea’s mom into a baby wouldn’t work. But I do think it’s what she deserves. Do you think you could just let Chelsea’s mom understand her a little more?”

“Awww Veronica, you’re such a sweet little girl. I’m so happy you’re being a good friend. You’re much more mature than your old, icky man-self, aren?t you pumpkin?” And before Vern could protest, Carrie swept him into a hug, and Vern felt his bladder squeeze until his diaper was warm and moist. “I think I can do this for you Vern.”

Vern?s teeth grinded “It’s not for me. It’s for her.”

“I understand sweetie. Don’t worry. I’ll help your friend/ I’ll make her mother understand. It will be a Christmas present to her.”

“How so?”

“Just tell her a few days before Christmas that you will give her a Christmas present that will help her make her mommy happy, ok baby?”

Vern didn’t know what to make of it, but hopped off the bed and walked out of Carrie’s bedroom. “Ok mommy.” he said as he walked out and Carrie saw the last trails of his pigtails bobbing out of the doorway.

The days rolled by, and about a week before Christmas Vern talked to Chelsea privately in the hallway at school.

“I want to give you a Christmas present early.” Vern said.

“Why?” Chelsea said after taking her thumb from her mouth.

“Because I want to help you,” He said, and he held out a small bottle of some shining clear liquid which Carrie had given him that morning. “Just pour this in your mommy’s drink before she goes to bed on Christmas eve and Santa will give her a gift. And your mommy will wake up and she’ll be happy. And she’ll love you again. OK?”

“No.” Chelsea said. “I don’t. What is this stuff?” she examined the bottle.

“It’s something that will help your mommy. You have to put it in her drink before she goes to bed on Christmas Eve. I promise it will be OK.”

“What’s gonna happen?”

“You’ll see. Trust me.” And Vern hugged her before heading to the bus to go home. Truth be told, Vern didn’t know what the liquid would do. Carrie had only told him that Chelsea’s mother had to drink it before bed on Christmas eve. Chelsea looked at the bottle for a few seconds before sticking it in her backpack carefully and walking to her bus.

On Christmas Ever, Chelsea managed to slip the bottle into her mother’s drink while her mother talked on the phone with Chelsea’s grandparents. Chelsea saw her mother smack her lips and wrinkle up her eyebrows as if she thought something was wrong with her drink, but then decided it was nothing and continued drinking. She slept very soundly that night.

“Now Vivian, I told you that if you wet your panties again you would be treated like a little baby from now on, didn’t I?”

“But--”

“DIDN’T I?!?!”

“Yes mommy...”

The tears are hot.

The floor is cold. My feet are cold.

A diaper. A diaper? My diapers?

“Now lay still you little baby!”

“OK mommy. Pwease don’t spank me anymore!”

Oww! The tears are hot. But I want. I feel it. I want to feel it! OWW! I want to wear diapers again. I want to be a baby again. Oww! Why doesn’t she understand?

“You want to be mommy’s little baby again don’t you?”

No.

“No.”

“Don’t you?!”

“No.”

Yes. Yes I do.

“...Yes. *sniff* Yes I do mommy.” I’ve always wanted to be your baby mommy. I never want to grow up. It’s comfortable being a baby. Just don’t spank me anymore. No more spankies. Why? Why do I want to be a baby? I Don’t... I Do... I Don’t... I... I don’t want. I do... I want... I want a teddy bear.

“Well in that case baby Vivian, drink up like a baby.”

No. Yes. No. Why? No. Please. Breast? Breast! Mommy breast!

No! I’m a woman! Where are my breasts? Why is this happening? Why do I want to be a baby? Why? Baby hungry. I want mommy’s milk!

I want mommy’s milk?

“There, Vivian. You want to be a baby again, then you’ll have to breastfeed just like one.”

She doesn’t sound mad anymore.

“Drink up, sweetie.”

No... She’s not mad. She’s giggling. And so am I.

Why? Why am I sucking my mother’s nipples? Why? Why does it feel so good? I don’t understand. Why can’t I move? Why don’t I have control? My mouth is sucking but I don’t want mommy’s milk... mommy’s milk so good. Mama make baby happy. Nipple feel good.

NO! I’m NOT a BABY!

“Mama, I’m your baby.”

No! Never!

“Forever and ever!”

Forever and ever?!?! NO!

“Yes baby Vivian. You’re mommy’s little baby forever and ever.”

Yes mommy. I’m your little baby forever and ever. Pwease love me mama. Pwease. I wuv you. Don’t be mean to me anymore. Be mama again. No drinky bad stuff that makes you mad. I want to be baby. I want to be mama’s baby.

“I want be mama’s baby forever and ever.”

“And you can be, little one. Mama will always love you. Mama will stop drinking for you. Mama loves you.”

“I wuv you mama”

I wuv you mama. I wuv being baby. I wuv milky. Diaper feews funny. Mama warm. Mama makes me feel warm and safe. I feel wet. Why do I feel wet? Mama is pretty. Mama will always take care of her baby. Mamas should always love their babies. My diaper is wet. Why is my diaper wet? I want my teddy bear. Mama? Where’s my teddy bear mama?

“Teddy?”

“Awww does my sweet little baby want her teddy bear?”

Yes mama I do.

“Yes mama”

Yes mama. I want to be a baby. You understand. Being a baby is love. Being a baby is freedom. Being a baby means that mama will always be there. Being a baby is the only way to be happy. I need you mama. I’m just a baby. I wuv you mama.

“I wuv you mama.”

“I love you too Vivian.”

“Vivian...”

“Vivian...”

“Vivian...”

“VIVIAN!” someone yelled, and Vivian Polowski woke up. The sun was rising. It was dawn. Vivian quickly wiped a thin line of cold sweat from her forehead.

“Vivian! Are you OK?” her husband whispered to her in the dark bedroom. It was a few seconds before Vivan could speak. She pulled the blanket away and grabbed at her nightgown. She pulled it up. No diapers. Just her panties. Her adult panties. Her husband looked at her nervously.

She jumped up from bed and walked down the hallway to Chelsea’s room. After hesitating, she slowly pushed the door open. Chelsea was asleep in her diapers tucked under pink covers.

It felt so real. Is that really what Chelsea wants? She asked herself. She asked herself if that’s why Chelsea wanted to be a baby again. If that’s why she couldn’t or wouldn’t be potty trained. Vivian asked herself if Chelsea wanted to be a baby to get her mother back. As though a flame of revelation sprung up inside Vivian, she knew it was her fault. She had been an alcoholic. But that would stop now. She couldn’t let Chelsea be abused. And what she felt in the dream could be what Chelsea could feel every day. Her daughter. Her daughter could have her mother back. If Chelsea wanted to be a baby, then Vivian would give that to her. And Vivian wanted to be the best mommy a woman could be. She walked over to Chelsea and whispered into her ear to wake her up.

“Mommy?” Chelsea said quietly. Vivian looked at her. She was a beautiful little girl. Her little girl. Her little baby girl.

“I’m sorry Chelsea.” she said as she pulled Chelsea from her covers and swung her into a cradling position. The hot tears from her dream were back on her face, and she rocked Chelsea in her arms. “I’m sorry I’ve been bad to you. I’m sorry for everything. But I promise That I will change. For you I will change. If you want to be a baby then you can be a baby forever. I love you Chelsea. I love you with all my heart.”

Chelsea didn’t hesitate. “I love you too mama.”

“Merry Christmas, my little baby.”

“Merry Christmas mama.”

And with her eyes full of tears, Vivian picked up a pacifier which was laying on Chelsea’s pillow, softly stuck it between Chelsea’s lips and sang to her as she rocked her daughter in her arms.

“Hush little baby, don’t say a word...

Mama’s gonna buy you a mocking bird...

And If that mockingbird won’t sing...

Mama’s gonna buy you a diamond ring...”
